I’ll praise it again; the best choice IMHO is Eclipse + PHPEclipse + Spket + Subclipse. I tried Aptana, even bought a commercial license, but turned out to be way too unstable for me and just didn’t have the power and features I was hoping it would. PDT will never provide all the features of the Zend IDE that is based on it, Zend’s gotta make money after all. But PHPEclipse is open-source, I can contribute to it if I am so inclined, and generally has been very stable for me.
If there were any official IDE for MODx, I would propose it be Eclipse + PHPEclipse + Spket + Subclipse + whatever other Eclipse plugins you like. Of course, TextMate comes in handy as well (and integrates well into Eclipse), but not everyone develops on a Mac.

For Text Mate clone on Windows (e-TextEditor) is it. Supports TM Bundles and works well. I’m going to move to OpenGeeks reqs since I can only go by what professional devs suggest.

Yes, Eclipse + PHPEclipse + Spket + Subclipse is an excellent combo. I’d only add QuantumDB for db management and Beyond compare plugin to replace the compare operations in eclipse. Beyond compare costs a little, but haven’t seen a better compare/merging SW yet and it binds nicely to eclipse.

I think I’ll stick with Aptana!
Eclipse doesn’t work with html/css files out-of-the-box and after installing the webtools plugin it still isn’t as good as aptana. Do I have to install something else to get eclipse a bit like Aptana, or do I have to stay at Aptana??

you can install aptana as a plugin for eclipse, aptana stand-alone is nothing else as eclipse+aptana-plugin, so far I know
It’s not a perfect solution but I’ve just started using a Firefox plug-in called "It’s all text" it add an Edit button to all text fields and you like it to your favorite editor. I’ve used it for a week or so and it’s very useful to edit templates and snippets using any editor you wish.
