    Greetings,
I'm trying to run the setup on a copied installation of Modx 2.3.2

I followed the copy instructions to duplicate the production site to a different directory on the same server. I want this to be a development site with different core and different database.

On the installation summary, it's getting stuck on
Checking if MODX_BASE_PATH directory is writable: Failed!

The directory is 0775 though.. So I'm a little concerned that the MODX_BASE_PATH is looking somewhere else.

I've inherited this and am not a LAMP expert, actually a real newbie...
So how does Apache and PHP run separately on the system such that their variables don't intersect with the production values?

    Thanks,
    Doug

Look at the paths and URLs in this file: core/config/config.inc.php.

Also check the three config.core.php files to make sure they're pointing to the new location of the core. They're here:

      MODX root directory
      /connectors directory
      /manager directory

OK.. I biffed that.. Looked at them a dozen times last night and missed a consistent typo.
I'll get to it later today.

But can you answer my question about PHP partitioning? The config file I inherited has a lot of "define" statements in it. How do these work when there are two different installations on the same server?

MODX will launch from the index.php file in one site's root directory (the one with the manager and connectors folders). That file will read the config.core.php file in the root to find out where the core is and will then load the config.inc.php file which will set all the paths and the DB name and credentials for that particular site, which will be used throughout the current session.

As long as the two sites have a different site root and different DBs (or a different table prefix), and you don't have any links back and forth between the sites, you should be OK.

Ok.. I'm in the Manager now.
But every page other than the home page is throwing a 404 error.

Also, I see these in the Error log

[2015-03-05 17:39:29] (WARN @ /index.php) `181` was requested but no alias was located.
[2015-03-05 17:39:29] (WARN @ /index.php) `262` was requested but no alias was located.

Do you have this in the head section of all templates?

                <base href="[[!++site_url]]" />

The exclamation point is probably not necessary unless you've got multiple front-end Contexts, but I'd start with it as above.

I only had <base href="/" />, but I replaced it with yours and am still getting the 404 error. I then turned off Friendly URLs and the page worked... So I think I have something wrong with the configuration of Friendly URLs.

Any guidance with the htaccess file?

                  dev.site.com...

                  Thanks.

Getting slightly further... I didn't have an htaccess file active in my dev directory.
The line in the htaccess file:

                    RewriteBase /

does not work.. so I have to manually put in index.php, but now the other friendly urls work in the various containers.

                    Still researching.

Is your install in a subdirectory (i.e., not in public_html)? If not, RewriteBase / should work.

If it is in a subdirectory, try this:

                      RewriteBase /subdirname/
