    I have a site that I would like to use as a starting point for other sites. What is the best way to export the ENTIRE site as a package? I know Vapor is what ModxCloud people use, but can I use vapor on non ModxCloud sites? If so, how? If not, is there a good alternative for us non modxcloud users?

    Thanks

        Yes, you can use Vapor on any site.

        You can also change the name of the resulting package by editing the vapor.php file on lines 25, 26 and 27 to set the constant variables to what you want. By default, these are commented out and it will use your hostname, the date, and the version of MODX being packaged.
        define('PKG_NAME', 'BootstrapAgency');
        /*define('PKG_VERSION', '1.0.0');
        define('PKG_RELEASE', 'pl');*/

        will produce something like bootstrapagency-2015-02-04-2.3.3-pl.transport.zip

        There is also Teleport, if you want to use Vapor's big brother, but it's command-line only.

          Be aware, however, that Vapor is not a full backup. It only packages the variable files, such as the assets directory, core/components and core/packages.

              I have the same problem as Jason Monette. My develop environment is Windows7 with XAMPP. I tried the following:

              1. http://rtfm.modx.com/revolution/2.x/administering-your-site/moving-your-site-to-a-new-server . Skipped this, too many options to break something and too tedious to make all this actions.
              2. Vapor. Tried to make package, and succeeded. But, Vapor is not a full backup.
              3. Teleport. Tried to make package, and failed. After installation and making profile I tried to Extract with complete.tpl.json and get an error.

              Ok, let`s try somthing else:

              MODX cloud. Made snapshot from dev cloud, and tried to install it via package manager on localhost... and ....

              Failed again!

              In my ideal world:
              In MODX manager there is one shining button [Teleport site] that make all my troubles away )))

                In the Cloud you can now download the full backups.

                    And how those backups could help me migrate site from localhost to hosting or from MODX Cloud to other hosting?

                      what does that mean?

                      That looks like binary data to me... Given Vapor creates a .zip, that sounds sorta expected, though normally you would only get a new file in core/packages/.
