Sorry I jot down anything that may be usefull.

No need to apologize. I'm the same way by nature!

I don't know what the fourohfour.cgi script does (other than what I could guess by the title), but I would suggest removing wherever you see it, although I think going through your PHP and looking for instances of passing arguments with a prepended & is still my first vote.

When it happened to me, I opened up my scripts (50+ of them in Notepad++) and scanned for any "&" I could find in all files. About 15 places had it used in a way PHP didn't like it (i.e. outside of a function call), and then I was fine. It took less than 10 minutes to get back up and running.

    Regards,
    Tom

P.S. another approach is to either comment out everything and uncomment out things one at a time until something breaks or comment out parts of PHP to see what breaks.

Ok went through and removed "&" I also added a .php Apache handler through Cpanel, it stopped the error popping up but now instead of showing the index.php it just pops up with a download of the index.php script. If Iremove the .php handler I get the error message. Looks like the old host used PHP 5.2 I'm using 5.5. I guess they are imcompatible.

I don't want to seem rude Tom but I'm knackered from all of this, I'm going to start fresh in the morning. Thanks for your help. I'll go through it more tomorrow.

If your index.php is being downloaded, check the properties of the page you're trying to show to make sure the Content Disposition setting is set to Inline instead of attachment.

As for PHP 5.2 being incompatible with PHP 5.5, there have been a few things over the years that have changed (usually for the better). I've worked with code that is 7 years old that needs some small changes, but once you get what's going on, it's all good.

Good luck! A fresh start tomorrow will help... I've been there.

          Regards,
          Tom

See if you have a php.ini file in the MODX root that contains a line with allow_call_time_pass_reference in it. Removing that line will stop the first error (though you may see more if there are functions that pass references).

You said you inherited a site, but did you have to then move it? If you only moved the files and not the database, you're not going to get anywhere because most of the site content is in the DB. If the site is working in its original location and you have cPanel access there, you should be able to move it without installing MODX at all.

You'll also need to know which version of MODX is used by the site.
