Thanks fo that, from other enquirers I have made the problem is with the .httaccess file
Totally out of my depth here, I have very very basic knowledge of php.
I am just making sure I am heading in the right direction.
I have installed every thing in a folder named scouts
The ht.access file in that folder should I rename this to .htaccess
There is also a file in the manager folder named ht.access this one I know I should change to .htaccess thus turning off the rewrite engine.
Also not to sure about which part of the ht.access file in the Scout folder to change is it:

        # The Friendly URLs part
        RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
        RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
        RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA]

Any help very appreciated as I have been trying to get this up and running over the weekend, and really need it running by tomorrow night as the powers that be would like to see the site.

          Still trying here
          changed the rewrite rule to:
          RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /scouts/index.php?q=$1 [L,QSA]
and then tired to rename the ht.access file but it will not let me change the name .htaccess
left it as ht.access but still no joy.

As I understood, you want to start the rewrite engine? Then rename the file to .htaccess.
Furthermore you have to switch in the manager to userfriendly urls.

Even on a local server .htacces with xamp should work

As far as I am aware I am trying to start the rewrite engine. None of the links work on xamp and have been told ht.access is the problem, I am a complete novice with this side of things. I have uploaded severalsites to xamp before, but none included php, and mysql. So never had to change these files before.
I am trying to change the name to .htaccess but every time I try I keep getting an error message saying that I must type a file name. should there be something before the.htaccess?

                I have activated the
LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so in the http.cof file as suggested but struggling here, the pages still do not link when using xamp. Also does not appear to see the style sheet.

check the path to your CSS file.
Look into the page source in your browser.

                      Still having problems.
When I goto resources>manage files I get access denied!
Still no style sheet but everything else seems to work,
just to check I have the configuration correct.
I have everything in a folder named scouts in xamp httpdoc folder
the settings I have for configuration are:
                      resource path- /scouts/assets/
                      resource url- assets/
                      path to css file- /style_one.css
and in the source coding the link for the style sheet is /style_one.css
                      and the base href="http://localhost/scouts/

hope this is enough to get down to the bottom of the problems I am having.
Any help very very appreciated as I need this thing up and running by thie evening.
