Did you run an update? or do a new install? If you already had 2.2.14 installed and followed the steps for updating to 2.3.1, you should have been prompted to update the existing install. The fact that it's looking for a database suggests to me that a new install rather than and update was done, unless I am misunderstanding.

It's a new install. I created the modx folder as shown in the image in my first post. I then unzipped the modx install file I downloaded into the modx folder and then deleted the zip file.

I'm doing my radio show at the moment so I should be able to create my new database later and post back with the results.

      Thanks!!

Remember to back up your site and the database.

Since you already have MODx installed and have been building a site... you already have a database. Updating from 2.2.14 to 2.3.1 does not require the creation of a new database.

Instructions for updating can be found at: http://rtfm.modx.com/revolution/2.x/administering-your-site/upgrading-modx Note: I have never been able to get CODA or Transit to merge directories on the same remote server, and the developer support has confirmed that it cannot be done. So, I use SSH. You can find the commands that I use on the forum at: https://forums.modx.com/thread/92185/updating-modx-using-ssh-on-godaddy-cpanel-hosting#dis-post-503518.

The paths are based on goDaddy's cPanel hosting. However, you should be able to see the path when you're in your Hosting Plan's File Manager viewing your directories. If it's not apparent, the host technical support should be able to assist.

Another method of updating is one that Bob uses and has posted on his site. http://bobsguides.com/modx-upgrade-faq.html

An even easier way to upgrade is to use the install.php script from here https://github.com/sottwell/installer

Just put the install.php file in your web root (where your site's index.php file is) and run it from the browser (domain.com/install.php) It does all the downloading and unzipping and moving files for you.

Thanks for posting this link to the install script. Certainly much easier than SSH.

Success!!!! I think I have finally installed the latest Modx successfully!! It was actually very straight forward. Now I have to see if ModX is for me and if it will meet my simple needs.

It can be as simple as you like, or as complex as you like. That's the beauty of MODX... there is rarely "one true way" of doing anything, usually with a little thought I can come up with at least three ways to do anything.

What I like most about it, though, and what attracted me to MODX in the first place, is the Tree structure for visualizing how your pages will be laid out in your menu structure. And equally, the simplicity of the Template system, where you use a simple HTML document as a template, replacing the dynamic parts, primarily the menu and each page's unique content, with some basic MODX-specific tags.

So it's like a painter with a blank canvas and you are the artist.

Being a first time Modx user, which video tutorials would you recommend that will take me from the very beginning of creating a Modx created site. At the moment I see the potential use of some of the Modx features but would like to see the creation of a simple site just so I get an idea of where to start.

                    Thanks!!

Well, personally I don't like video tutorials because I have no short term memory and can't remember what he did literally two seconds earlier. However, there are quite a lot of them available... I'd say Google will be your best friend. I did give this presentation in Utricht a couple of years ago. http://modxpo.eu/2012/schedule/sessions/building-a-modx-site-in-90-minutes
