With regard to the 'Posted by' area of the ArticlesRowTpl I know that I can specify a different field e.g., 'fullname' etc., rather than use the default 'username' field. But what if I wanted to use a new field named 'nickname'? Is it possible to add a field to the Manager User Profile page so I can target it?

Not without making a custom modUser class. You might be able to use the extended fields, though. Extended fields are stored as a JSON string.

Oddly enough I had considered Extended fields, but only being familiar with the term and not fully grasping the concept I think I may be over my skis on this one, at least for the time being.

Extended fields are fine if you just want to store user information for display. They are not so good if you need to use that information for selecting or sorting users.

The ClassExtender extra will help you extend the modUser object and put the extra fields on the Create/Edit User field.
