Upload the attached file to your root and to the manager folder
Rename to php.ini
Replace your .htaccess file with your original copy - hopefully you made a copy
Thanks I have now done that. I still get the 500 error, is that just due to cache and if so how do I clear it? My original .htaccess is now back to this:

Cache files shouldn't be the problem, but if you want to clear the cache files manualy: FTP to "assets/cache/"
In the folder find and delete all files like: docid_1.pageCache.php, docid_2.pageCache.php
There are also: siteCache.idx.php + sitePublishing.idx.php
The last two can also be deleted - they will be re-built by MODX when you login via the manager.
If you delete the last two and goto the front end without previously logging in, you will get an error - after deleting, login so that they are recreated.
I have just copied your htaccess to my htaccess file and my website is back, and 1and1 is now on PHP 5.4. Is it possible that I have lost anything by copying your htaccess file?

yes
The problem is coming from your .htaccess file
This will be monoton, but comment out your .htaccess file line for line until you find out what is causing the problem
Once you have found the problem, you can rectify it
If all fails - you now have a copy of mine and that works
Ok seems like clearing the cache has now allowed me access to the manager so I can now continue my work. Doesn't appear to be any problems with submitting your htaccess in place of mine so fingers crossed. Thank you so much for the help it's very much appreciated
