So far so good. Uploaded new zip. Unpacked it with SSH and then moved the setup out into the domain (a bit tricky with SSH, but I was able to do it).
Fingers crossed.
The setup screen is visible! yahoo. Thanks Susan. So the tech guide I think did mess up something in the file by navigating to the setup/index.php while is was still inside the MODX install directory.
And the update took about 5 seconds. All logged in to the site now. Thank you for your very helpful suggestions Susan. I really appreciate it.

I use Google a lot when using SSH. Search for what I want to do, find a good example, then copy/paste the command line. I even installed a nice Mac "Terminal" alternative called iTerm that supports copy/paste into the terminal window so I could do that.
There's also a file system called sshfs, which mounts a remote file system via SSH so you can deal with it as if it were on your local machine.

I just copied the necessary mount command from the terminal window to a text file, and any time I need to mount the remote file system I copy it from the text file to a terminal window to run it. I'm lazy

I really appreciate your jumping in to help me. Suggesting to look to see if there were and php errors was the key to finding the solution.
A word to those performing MODx updates that get the blank white page after navigating to the setup:
When doing a MODx update, do not navigate to the setup directory until it is in the location you need it to be for the update. If the modx site is out in the root of the domain, then setup must be moved there first before navigating to it from the brower to run the update installation.
If you get the blank white page, follow Susan's suggestion. Delete the setup directory. Re-upload the MODx.zip. Unpack on the server. THEN, move the setup up directory to the location you need it to be for updating your site. Then run the setup, and follow the update instructions.
