According to Barrie North of Tech Republic,
2008 will be the year of the open source CMS. And given that MODx was voted the most promising OS CMS last year, that very well may mean that 2008 will be the year of MODx. Or maybe it will just be the start of the MODx millennium.

Well, according to the Mayans, we only have about 4 years left, so let’s get it in gear!

If Microsoft does what they do best, 2008 will be a sad year for open-source in general, in case they really take over Yahoo.
Why? I, for one, don’t use Yahoo! or any of its stuff (except that my boyfriend has a Yahoo! email account). Now if they were trying to buy up PHP I’d be looking at Python real hard right about now...
Actually, I’ve worked for two companies (one networked gaming company shortly before MSN went live, and one comparison shopping company eight years ago) that Microsoft started sniffing around. Nobody listened to me, and Microsoft proceeded to rip off a considerable amount of ideas from both of them. Both companies were all excited at the thought of MS using their product, which didn’t happen. The gaming company were actually convinced that their service was going to be bundled with Win95 when it was released. The second time around I took the day off the day the MS reps were being shown around the office. I didn’t trust myself not to throw a chair at them or something.

When I read that there was a 2000% increase for traffic in December 2007 compared to December 2006 for Joomla, I checked us out against Joomla and guess what we have a 4580.3% increase since last year

If you want to be jealous try comparing against drupal.org. They are averaging 200K plus per month!? Want to put it all into perspective try looking at this graph:

Now I understand why noone knows MODx and everyone knows WordPress.
Cheers,

Open source is great but gems are found from the nimble and independent and idiosyncratic. It always makes me think of this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JL89GmwWj-M. I was listening to
Spark on CBC this morning and they were talking about some of the issues with design by committee and how Wikis can sometimes suck because of collaboration and sometimes shared knowledge can be great. One of the best apps I use is e-TextEditor and it is one guy. MODx is a great example of a project can work because it is a focused core team who can either accept or reject changes to the core code base on their goals of the project.

"young models"
Of course we have a bigger growth since we’re younger, but you can’t compare with projects who have been around for more than twice than us also...
WordPress is on a slippy slope, the 29 millions $ they recently got might seem like a godsend, but I am not sure about how it will affect the community... Matt better be wise on this one...
