Responsive Image Solution: Interchange meets phpThumbsOf

I'll do the update to 2.2.12 today—hopefully before the blizzard doom strikes our region later today.

Well, not much progress during the day. To many other fires to put out.

So — one of my MODx sites needs updating in a big way, and I can't figure out how to merge directories. It's a myHosting.com plan and has a File Manager, but tech support says it does not do directory merging and they say that SSH is not an option with their plan.

Yikes! I tried CODA last month on another site, and it doesn't work. Their tech support said that it first has to know what's in the directories in order to handle the merge.

I have the brand new version of Dreamweaver, but Adobes support is such an incredible maze that I can't tell whether Dreamweaver will handle it or not.

Any tips? How do you merger the directories?

I may try see if I can SSH in. Don't entirely trust their chat support. Only other option might be to create support ticket and have them do it for me on the server side.

Do you have CPanel access?

I usually do the following to update a site.

1. Login to the manager and flush all sessions and flush all permissions. If I have it installed, use the CacheClear extension to clear the cache. Clear the error log.
2. Log out of the Manager.
3. In CPanel, go to the File Manager and manually delete the files in core/cache if I didn't use CacheClear.
4. 
   In CPanel, go to the File Manager and create an archive of my MODX folder. Keep the archive on the server, but also download it locally. This will allow me to quickly restore the previous files if needed.
5. Export a backup of the database through the CPanel back up system to my local drive and/or go into phpMyAdmin and export the database. Keeping a local copy.
6. Login to the Manager and optimize the database under Reports/System Info/Database Tables.
7. In the Manager I update all the extensions (packages) that have updates, testing their features on the live site to see if they still function (they usually do).
8. If everything is working fine after the extension updates I again flush sessions, flush permissions, and make sure core/cache is clear and logout of the Manager.
9. In Cpanel, in the File Manager section, I upload the .zip of the latest version of MODX.
10. I unzip the zip file. It usually puts the files in a folder.
11. I go into that folder, select all the files, and drag and drop them over the root folder where MODX is installed.
12. I go to the browser and run http://whateveryourdomain.com/setup
13. I update the site.
14. I test the site. It's usually fine. Sometimes I've had minor issues with MIGX variables, but all I had to do was resave the MIGX template variables in the back end.

You should be using pthumb in any case. It's pretty much a drop-in replacement for phpthumbof, but works much better.

pThumb is what I ended up using in conjunction with pictureFill and it has been working very well to deliver images for my responsive site.
