Ok. After checking the settings for phpThumbsUp, it looks like my core path is OK, but the cache path is inverted from what you show.

Here is screen shot of my core directories with phpthumbsup items highlighted.

permissions on core/cache/phpthumbsup are: 755

not sure if any special permissions for core/components/phpthumbsup are needed.

Not sure what you mean by "already in the folder in SSH"
There is no cache folder associated with phpThumbsUp unless you're referring to cache/phpThumbsUp.

What should the permission be on that folder? Currently mine are 755. I am unable to change using Fetch and would have to SSH in and modify with a command prompt or contact support.

Meantime, I put a folder cache folder at components/phpthumbsup and changed the core cache in the settings to /components/phpthumbsup/cache

Cleared MODx cache and updated my .tpl to [[+image:phpthumbsup]]

Still doesn't work. Missing images, and the generated page source path for the images is:

Do you know if my permissions are correct? There is mention of making sure the cache is 'writeable'
755 makes it such that the apache server can read, write , execute.
Groups and Others can read and execute.

I meant I was already in it on the serevr (as id navigated there).

My cache folder in core/phpthumbsup/cache is set as follows:

drwxr-xr-x 2 apache apache 24576 Feb 17 16:04 cache

The path looks right - if your viewing it on a desktop - itll only generate smaller images if your viewing it on your phone for example.

looking at your settings it all looks correct, the only thing i cna think is that either the permissions are wrong for the cache folder (check error log) or the server cant handle the task of generating the thumbs?

I translated your permissions to compare them to mine. drwxr = 7 | xr = execute and reade = 5 | x = execute = 1
If I have translated correctly, yours are 751. Mine are 755, so I actually have greater permissions that you — not bragging of course:)
And, I am on an apache, so that rules out a server issue. Issue could be that my server runs PHP 5.2.8 or that my MODx needs to be 2.2.12

I tried changing the location of the cache for the add-on caused all of my packages to vanish. As soon as I changed the core_cache path back to its original setting, all my packages came back, at which point I uninstalled and deleted the add-on. To much of an unknown for me.

Today I will backup everything to date, and perform the update, and the perhaps give it a go. Frogabog performed the update yesterday and was at least getting images to display, but was still having trouble with transparent png files no longer being transparent.

I have it on good authority that the .png transparency issue in 2.2.12 could be a known adjustment of sorts in the library and it will be checked into. I'd give it a day or so cuz there's sleep to get in the way of an answer, for the next few hours at least. You were talking of not using sizing anyway, and the omission of sizing in the call fixes the transparencies. Just make sure your full size image is the largest that you want displayed. The images do resize with browser resizing.

The package installs the cache folder in the core/cache directory and sets the system setting to point to that location. Changing the location in both places wouldn't help since technically it's correct if they match. It doesn't matter where the cache folder is as long as it's set properly in system settings.

It's safe to update to 2.2.12 and rather than muck about with all this wasting time, I'd give it a go so you can move forward. Updating is easy, just follow the directions at the rtfm and don't use FTP. You'll be fine.

Oh, one of the best pieces of advice I ever heard when working with responsive design is to remember that your end users aren't going to be resizing their browser window watching for the images to change. No one does that but us!
