Hi Bob:
How are you? Happy New Year!
With the server I'm on, I have to use SSH to decompress the file. It does not have a file transfer utility. As well—the tech support has suggested I use SSH to make backups of the folders I'm updating. All way over my head, though I did use SSH to unzip the MODx archive on my first install.
This simple upgrade from 2.2.8 to 2.2.10 is proving to be anything but simple.
Hi Bob:
Looks like my response to you earlier did not post. Thanks for responding.
This particular server does not have a utility, but I have spent the afternoon learning how to do most tasks with SSH using Terminal.
Here's my solution for performing the MODx update process of Merging folders from the New MODx folder with those already existing on the server from the previous install.
I was unable for find an FTP client that would facilitate a merge on the remote server. Local to Remote merge and vice versa are possible, but not solely on the remote.
With SSH using the following command the merge works. Folders are not overwitten. Contents of folders is copied. New files are copied. Existing files are updated.
cp -R /path/to/folderToMerge* /path/to/folderToMergeInto
IMPORTANT not to put a slash after the folderToMerge . Doing so will put a copy of the folderToMerge inside the folderToMergeInto rather than actually merging the folders.
CORRECTION: I found on my server tat by leaving the name of the folderToMergeInto resulted also in the folderToMerge being place inside the folderToMergeInto rather than merging the folders. By removing the name of the folderToMergeInto the command worked perfectly.
2 days struggling with FTP applications, and SSH commands, and the final setup process of the MODx update took about 10 seconds. Sheesh!
I hope this is helpful for anyone having issues doing what sounds like a simple step in the MODx upgrade process.

You want to copy what's *in* the modx-2.3.2-pl directory to the root, not the directory itself. Here's the method I usually use:

The only way I found to do the updates is via SSH
I can find my notes and post them if you like. The paths will be different of course.
How familiar are you with SSH? Beyond what everyone says, unless you do it all the time, it IS be intimidating because you cannot see what you are doing. As well it should. SSH is great in that it will allow you to do a lot of things much much faster than with FTP. However, caution is advised! You can do a lot of damage in the same amount of time.
