Does anyone suggest CODA or Transmit, or any other method for updating MODx 2.2.8 to 2.2.10?
I have Dreamweaver CS4 and Fetch 5.7—neither as far as I can tell support directory merging. Fetch does not provide an oncscreen view that would be conducive to merging anyway. I can only view the contents of a folder rather than see a list of all the folders and contents.

If Transit or CODA will work—for anyone who uses these applications—will I be able to just drag a single folder and have it merge not only the main directory, but any subdirectories within?

    Any feedback greatly appreciated.

I don't know about the applications you've mentioned. I use CyberDuck, and it merges everything.

However, I prefer to us ssh, scp a zip file to the server, unzip it on the server, then merge everything directly on the server. If you have a CPanel hosting account, you can use the CPanel file manager to upload the zip file, extract it, then move the directories into the proper location.

Thanks Susan. The host actually suggested CyberDuck, but I couldn't tell from their site right away if merge was available. MODx recommends CODA or Transit.

I've been away from MODx for a while here so trying to get back in the saddle. I have might site comp built and now I'm ready to start developing it in MODx. Just thought I would go ahead an upgrade from 2.2.8 to 2.2.10.

Thank you for responding so quickly. Happy New Year!

          Hey Susan:
I got a version of cyberduck that works on my mac still running 10.5.8 and quickly figured out how to connect and then move the files around, but the only option is to Replace. I'm not seeing an option to merge folders.

With this MODx upgrade it says I need to unpack the MODx zip on the server, and then move the folders out into the directory—merging with existing folders and overwriting any necessary files—but leaving all other files intact.

It overwrites the same files, leaving yours alone. For example, uploading the core directory won't bother any of your core/packages files or core/components files, it will only overwrite the ones in the unzipped package.

I'm confused. I've set up a test scenario with two sets of folders and viewing them and their contents in cyberduck. When I click what supposedly would be a new Modx folder with contents and drag it to the root of the site, I get a message that the folder already exists. This is expected. But the only option I am given is to "Cancel" or "Overwrite". In my test scenario I have it structure so that after the move I can tell what happened. In this case—overwrite basically gets rid of everything and puts the new, identically named folder and files in it's place.

I hope I am making sense. I'm doing this for now as a test on my own site so that I don't wreck the real one during my learning curve.

With cyberduck, I just drug my new directory up to the root, and for kicks just clicked overwrite, but nothing happened. The existing folder was not merged to OR overwritten.

I am beginning to think that the merge thing only works when uploading from local to remote. Per the MODx update instructs I would be moving directories and files from one location to another—i.e. from the MODx install folder out to the root.

My brain is beginning to hurt.

This is the message that was in the upgrade instructs.
                  Do Not Overwrite Directories!
Make sure your FTP program merges directories and does not overwrite them!

                  There was also this note:
Make sure that you don't overwrite core/config/config.inc.php, and that it's writable. Also, don't overwrite or erase the core/components/ directory.

Maybe these are the only two items I need to be concerned with?

At this juncture, I find it impossible to follow the upgrade instructions as they were written. I am not able to merge folders using CODA or Cyberduck from one location on the remote server to another.
At this point, I will unzip the MODx 2.2.10 archive on the server and then using CODA or Cyberduck, manually open each folder and copy any files inside to the corresponding folder on the server.
Very tedious! I'm going to need lunch and coffee before I tackle this.

Thanks Susan for reponding to my post. Much appreciated.

Do you have access to a decompress/unzip utility or "Extract" in cPanel? If so the method described here would work: http://bobsguides.com/modx-upgrade-faq.html.
