I would like to create multiple user groups as defined user segments made up of various characteristics (for example "Sci-Fi Movie Fans" or "Football Fans from Texas"). Then use a snippet or plugin to update the profile as they move from page to page. If they visit the "Football" section and their IP is from Texas add them to that user group.

Maybe you had a person visit your site 10 times in the last two days searching for "modx guides", you could then target them with a banner/link/content that tells them about the wonderful book you have for sale on amazon.

I imagine it would be a combination of plug-in, snippets and CMPs.

OK, I get it now. There's no question that it could be done in MODX, but it looks like it would be an extremely complex add-on with some fairly sophisticated algorithms. I think it's very unlikely that anyone would do it as a free open-source extra.

I went ahead and create three database table to keep track of users and groups rather than trying to merge it into the modx users table. Made a plug-in and snippet, used Bruno's MIGX and BobRay's MyComponent to create the package. I think I spent more time on making the package then writing the plugin and snippets.
