Have a look at your error log (well, try and do something in the Manager that would normally show you some thumbnails THEN check the log!) See if you see any PHP security errors in there? The phpthumb.functions file uses shell_exec for some reason and most people disable that. My suspicion is that it's that but your verification would be helpful too.
