Hello - I was wondering what the best way to back up a MODX site was? Is there a way to download the entire thing from the back end and put it on a flash drive or something?

    Cheers

There are several ways to so this actually. One would be to simply export your database using phpMyAdmin or SSH and then also zip or tar up your web directory and download those two files.

Another newer way would be to utilize something MODX just released called teleport. If you are comfortable with the command line and have SSH with PHP CLI on your server configuring teleport to create and inject snapshots is rather simple.

Hi JP - I'm not familiar with command line I'm afraid :/ (although it's something I'd like to learn for batch files and stuff!) So I guess the other way would be more appropriate for me.

I'm not the one who has built the site a friend has done it for the company I work for, but I just need to make sure that I secure (and can secure) everything on it.

        Cheers

The SiteCheck extra has a build-in database backup function that's really easy to use, but it stores the backups on the site's server, which may not be what you want. http://bobsguides.com/sitecheck-tutorial.html

There is also this, though I've never used it: http://modx.com/extras/package/databackup

It's actually very easy to backup your MODX database to your local machine using PhpMyAdmin in your host's cPanel. You just select the MODX database, then follow the steps on the "Export" tab. The default values for everything should be fine.

Surprisingly, there's no extra I know of for Revolution that backs up the MODX files. Again, though, it's fairly easy to do this in the cPanel File Manager. Just select all the files and directories in the MODX root and click on "Compress". Then download the resulting .zip file to your local machine.

Hi Bob thanks for the reponse.

OK I'm in the back end of the site but I'm not too sure where the cPanel File Manager is?

You're looking at the MODX Manager. You need to log in to the cPanel account at your hosting service -- nothing to do with MODX. wink

                Ah right, ok.

I'm with Just Host me, not sure if you know where it is on that site?

                  cPanel Access
                  Problem:

How do I Access My Account Control Panel?

                  Solution:

You may access the cPanel of your Just Host account using any of the following:

If the NS (Name Servers) of domain is not yet pointing to Just Host, use http://Justhost.com.
To access the cPanel securely to encrypt the username and password so the information cannot be viewed or sniffed, use https://login.Justhost.com.
If either port 2082 or 2083 (cPanel ports) are blocked on your network, you always access th cPanel via http://login.Justhost.com

In all login options above, enter the primary domain or username of the account and its main password to gain access.

Note: Your account username can be found in the Account Setup Confirmation Email that was sent to you when your account was initially setup. If you did not receive the Welcome Email, please contact us via Phone, Live Chat or by Opening a Ticket and we will send it to the contact email address listed on the hosting account.

Hmm I can't find access to cpanel on their website but they do say they use it, have you tried www.yourdomain.com/cpanel ?

You might also want to look at code guard ( I use it and its fantastic ), only $5 a month and it does daily backups of your files and database on their cloud server, if you ever need to restore anything you just log in and select what you want to restore, you can get a 14 day free trial if needed.
