Ah, i see, i'm beginning to understand it now, thanks for the insight. I've felt that editing code inside the manager might not be best practice, and came across something called static resources. If i understand it right, it means the actual code files reside elsewhere and would be edited in the more practical way by using something like a code editor (i use espresso for example). So Ace and Codemirror wouldn't be things to install and set up for end users to use then, such as clients to edit their site (unless they could at least write html).

That is correct. In fact, by default they are not applied to resources, only to elements. They can be set to work for resources as well, if you wanted to.

I have a partial installer package for MarkItUp, which adds a toolbar with buttons for inserting tags, images and links - sort of a non-WYSIWYG editing tool.

I'd like to see a cross between CodeMirror (line numbers, syntax highlighting, some pretty good error detection like extra closing tags or unclosed tags, as well as search-and-replace) and MarkItUp (tag, image and link insertion toolbar buttons). And a WYSIWYG editor that is modified to completely ignore MODx tags and everything inside of them.
