Hi, I wanted to ask if there's anyone who might recommend a rich text editor to use for revo 2.2.8? I can see an editor called tinymce, but there's little information about it and what i have been able to find in the forum relates to lots of problems getting it to work. I tried tinymce once on an earlier modx site which got abandoned and experienced similar problems that's described in various posts online. Basically, it was very buggy and seemed unstable, and inserted numerous line breaks and empty tags all over the place.

Alternatively, i've found an add-on called news publisher, created by Bob Ray but this isn't mentioned in the list of rich text editors on the modx extras page. So before i take a gamble i just wanted to ask in any case if there is something out there which works or that anyone might recommend. I would be grateful for anyone's suggestions.

TinyMCE seems to be the most popular one; it's much improved. It still does a lot of "helpful" modification to HTML tags. This is a feature of TinyMCE itself, however, and there isn't anything MODx can do about it.

Redactor is an excellent not-free editor that I have heard nothing but great things about. I actually purchased a license, but haven't had the chance to install it and check it out personally yet. Hopefully sometime this weekend, now that Revo 1.0.10 is out.

As a Javascript editor, elRTE is my favorite, but that add-on is not being developed or supported as far as I know. Pity. The same developer's elFinder file manager is really remarkable.

CKEditor I believe is a viable alternative to TinyMCE, although I don't know of any particular advantage or disadvantage to it over TinyMCE.

There's also Ace, and the one I use, CodeMirror, if you don't actually need all the Rich Text WYSIWYG stuff. Ace and CodeMirror provide line numbering and syntax highlighting for HTML, PHP and other types of code.

Thanks for the other suggestions. I'm just trying to work out which one might suit best, it's for an end user to operate so they can make edits on the site pages and perform tasks such as adding images etc. Basic stuff without the need to know html. What exactly is syntax highlighting?

There are 3 viable Rich Text Editors for MODX at the moment: TinyMCE (which is very functional despite your past issues), CKEditor and a commercial version of Redactor by modmore. All three can be made very simple. For instance, TinyMCE's default install has way too many buttons and I customize that by eliminating all but what I'd give my clients (if I still had clients). Here's how I limit TinyMCE: https://gist.github.com/jaygilmore/2151061

Anything more and you're going to have your clients be able to break the design or confuse them into not using it.

After a thorough investigation and having previously tried tinymce, in the end i went with ckeditor. So far so good, works a treat and would well recommend it!

                  What exactly is syntax highlighting?
Highlighting code words and tags, according to the syntax of the chosen language, such as PHP, HTML, CSS, Javascript, or whatever programming language it's configured to scan the content for.

Thanks, i don't think i've never come across an instance where i've searched for code and it's been highlighted if i understand you right. I think i got thrown a bit when looking at RTE's and found Ace for revo. It stated it was a syntax highlighter and code editor which i didn't understand (aren't all RTE's code editors where you can highlight the text / code such as when you cut/ copy or past). I'm just used to seeing RTE's whereby you can either see one side where you're writing as you might a word-document, or you can view the source and write code in that way (such as the html behind the page and maybe some inline css or style classes etc). Sorry if this sounds a bit thick.

Ace and CodeMirror aren't WYSIWYG rich-text editors, they are editors for coders. All they do is provide line numbers, and highlight the language's key words in different colors. That's what is meant by "syntax highlighting", as opposed to the user selecting text, which gets highlighted to mark the selected text in a RTE.

Here's a screenshot of CodeMirror and some HTML.
