From a custom themes aspect, I don't see anything being different to how it is now. You're editing the CSS as you normally would (by distribution time, the Sass stuff is pre-compiled into CSS anyway). As for HTML, that is the same ... 2.2 themes may need updating because of markup and theme changes in 2.3 but besides that, there are no big changes required.

Will all of this have any relevance for 3?

Square recently did a nice write up on learning the basics of Grunt that delves a bit more "under the hood"

Just wondering what this means for making custom themes for the manager ? Will it still be as easy as editing html templates and readable css files?

This workflow is put in place for the MODX manager default theme, meaning we are not restricting or defining how another theme could or should be built. That said, you could certainly duplicate the default theme and use the existing toolset modified to your needs if you wished.

Revo 3.0 is a different ball game altogether and we can't say for now what shape that'll take ... we'll let you guys (and gals) know as soon as we can on the direction that will take. Lots of things still in the conceptual/planning stage to tie anything down at this time. We can say though ... it'll be awesome when it lands smiley

Speaking of theming, on example of using Sass to power multiple themes would be QuickBar. You can see the new themes here:
                https://github.com/jpdevries/quickbar

Each theme is merely defining some variables for style and layout and passing them into reusable mixins:

I found that I needed to install rvm in order to properly install the ruby gems http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7018090/gems-cant-be-installed-as-non-root-in-os-lion

Well, this is not going well at all. I thought rvm would do the job, but I'm getting
Please note that `rvm gem ...` was removed, try `gem install sass` or `rvm all do gem install sass` instead. ( see: 'rvm usage' )

Don't seem to be able to install it at all. Even with rvm it won't install. I never have quite figured out how OS X manages permissions. It's not quite as straightforward as Linux or other *nixes. [ed. note: sottwell last edited this post 13 years, 1 month ago.]
