Seems to be the same pages that are being slow.

    here’s content from them.

Is the template switcher plugin installed? If so, delete it.

Put in temporary timers to show what’s taking so long on the slow pages compared to the normal pages ... maybe in your footer:
MySQL queries took [^qt^] seconds for [^q^] queries(s), document parsing took [^p^] seconds, for a total time of [^t^] seconds, and [^s^].

Then you can start seeing which snippets or plugins are affecting each page and figure out the source of the slowdown.

That said, for the three pages I can see in the navigation, none take very long to render ... certainly not 10-30 seconds, including:
      http://www.osnow.co.uk/index.php?id=32 (home)
      http://www.osnow.co.uk/index.php?id=78 (my portfolio)
      http://www.osnow.co.uk/index.php?id=79 (contact)

If the performance changes throughout the day, that most likely points to an overloaded shared server.

        Thanks Ryan.

        Template Switcher isn’t installed.

On first attempt with the new footer... on http://www.osnow.co.uk/index.php?id=33 it got the following...

MySQL queries took 0.0035 s seconds for 0 queries(s), document parsing took 0.0654 s seconds, for a total time of 0.0689 s seconds, and cache.

        Does that help?

And yes it seems that only 2 out of my 3 major trees are sluggish. The ’OffPeak’ pages seem to be fine. Any ideas why it only affects these two?

        Thanks for all your help.

When I watch the slow pages load using Firebug, I’m seeing that the php page loads nice and fast, and common.css loads fine, then it hangs on reset-min.css. I’ve tried it several times under different conditions, and it always hangs at this file. It finally comes in at 0 bytes - not 404 - and then the browser loads the rest of the page just fine.
At first glance I didn’t even see reset-min.css directly referenced in your template. [edit: oh, chrisandy had found it right away, above]
The full file path to it is /assets/templates/rounded/css/reset-min.css
I can’t say what to do next, other than figure out what that file is supposed to be doing and why it’s taking so long to return an empty non-404 response.

            Ok,

Removed the import on the css... and it seems to have worked. No idea what it was in there for - must have been left in there from my first incarnation. Seems a little odd for it to have disappeared though as the site worked fine a few days ago.

            Fingers crossed its all working.

Thanks for all of your help! I am so grateful!

It’s loading nice and fast here. Odd that the @import would have such an impact.

By it’s name, that css file seems to have something to do with YUI.
                http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/reset/

Seems that the server is just taking a long long time to respond to 404s. And when it does, it’s not returning 404 status, it’s returning 200 OK with an empty document.

What I was saying in my first post was - surely the @import command is a hangover from when you had your CSS in-line? But one CSS file calling another CSS file - I didn’t think you could do that?

Yes, you can import from a CSS file using the @import syntax.
