jgrant, thanks for the detailed reply.

    1. I can't upload a file, it says waiting and Queued For Upload.
    2. the Server API is LiteSpeed V6.0
    3. My MODX_ASSETS_PATH I think is ok: /assets/
    4. I added a new directory with an image as suggested. It appears in the file browser, but doesn't open, same as Filesystem.

    Any further suggestions appreciated.
    Martin

Oh, your web server is LiteSpeed?
I don't have any experience with LiteSpeed, but it's not on the officially supported list (http://develop.modx.com/develop/revolution/requirements/), so it could be part of the problem. Do you have any other Revo sites running ok on it?
About the only idea I have left is to take a look at what's coming back from the requests for connectors/browser/directory.php. If you're using Chrome developer tools and navigate to the MODX file manger, you'll see the requests in the Network tab; look at the headers and response. That might give you a clue as to what's going wrong.

This at at least gives me new options for diagnosing, thanks. Is this the right response?

        /connectors/browser/directory.php?action=getList&id=/
        Request Method:POST
        Status Code:200 OK

        Response: []

No, the response should be a JSON object, sort of like this:
[{"id":"departments\/","text":"departments","cls":"folder pchmod pcreate premove pupdate pupload pcreate","type":"dir","leaf":false, ...

I don't know why it's returning nothing on your site. I was hoping you'd see some error message that would offer a clue.
About the I can suggest is to try putting the site on a more mainstream web server like Apache or NGINX and seeing if that fixes it. Granted that may not be a very practical solution!

Appreciate your help. Sadly, I'm almost ready to give up on modx.

I have a similar problem. But only one directory called "images" is affected. I can rename it and then it shows all the contents. As soon as I rename it back to "images", I can't open it again.
