It's for upgrades, but the section on transferring the files applies. It's much faster and much more reliable.

Lesson learned. You have no idea how much time you've saved me toggling through folders.

This install is on a staging site: (staging.mydomain.com). Do you recommend the same steps for eventual migration to the live site? (of course creating a new DB)

I've worked with Modx for a few years and gotten tons of helpful advice from your posts, thanks.

Yes, that's what I'd do to move a staged site to a live site (unless the staging site is on the same server -- then there's a much easier way and you can use the same DB).
