Charset & Collation During Install Possible problem why Installation Not Sucessful?

So...
I spoke with myHosting support and they have set the database to be utf8 and utf8_general_ci
They are emailing me a script that they say I need to run on each table. Not too long of a list so I think it's doable.

Then perhaps, I can follow Bob's instructions with editing the config.inc.php and hope no odd characters got slipped into the database.

If this doesn't work right off the bat, I'll just delete the install and drop the contents of the database and start over. I've only just begun so only losing time.

I'm in a holding pattern. myHosting changed the database to utf8 and utf8_general_ci.

Then they ran a script to change the first table in the list. But when I run the script they provided, I get a syntax error. Waiting on them respond to my issue.

Meantime—I downloaded my config/inc.php and it reads: $database_connection_charset = 'utf8'; So I am guessing that my config file is already OK, and the conversion to latin1_swedish_ci was occurring on the database.

So...if I can get this syntax error figured out, I can go through and convert each table with the script, and hope that MODx still works.

I agree with Jason & Bob at this point: Better to set the database, and THEN do the install.

Done. Very tedious, but I ran the following script on each item in the database using phpmyadmin.

ALTER TABLE table_name CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8;

Note: The support at myHosting however did make a change on their end that is supposed to ensure that future additions are utf8_general_ci

So far so good. Logged into MODx manager and everything seems to be functioning OK. Now...on to coding. Will certainly review the database as I begin to build just to confirm that all is being added as intended.

Just made a simple change to a resource template, clicked on SAVE, and the system is just hanging there with the little progress bar repeating over and over.
Clearly there is some big issue now. I'm guessing MODx is trying to save to the database, but can't.

Strange, because I had just gone into System settings and update the site_name, and that seemed to go OK. And I updated my profile and that process went OK.

As much as I would like to learn how to troubleshoot a database I may have to switch from myHosting to goDaddy.

Could be a mod_security issue; can it save anything at all in a resource? Or is it hanging on the specific content you're trying to save?

The save would never complete. I closed the browser window, then navigated back to the manager in a new browser window, and the change I had made to the template was saved.
So... I made another change, and the same thing occurred. Progress bar slowly repeating over and over with Please Wait... at the top of that little window.

So it is actually saving, just not returning properly after the save. Any errors in the Manager's error log? How about Javascript errors on the page?

Just went back to the manager. Created a new resouce. Named it. Put in a long title and a short sentence in comments, and once again the Save just hangs. So closed that browser window, and then in a new browser window went back to the manager, and my new page shows up in the resource tree.

So... clearly it's able to save the info to the database, but something is causing the Save to hang. Maybe it's something to do with the progress bar?

I just set up MODx on a goDaddy server last week and it is super fast on their server, and so far have not experienced any issues other than one glitch during the install.

But for this site, I've been messing with the install and the database stuff for several days now.

I can tell now for sure, it's specific to the modal Save dialog. I viewed the page in a new window, then toggled back to the manager, made a change, hit save, and while the save progress bar is hanging there repearing, I toggled back to the view page. Refreshed that page, and my recent change is visible. All the while, the save progress bar is still repeating.

Hm. Definitely sounds like time to cut your losses on this one; your time is worth more than that.

This MUST have something to do with my changing my charset and collation after doing the setup. I'm convince of this because I was working in the Manager yesterday and created a template and temporary home page and all functioned great.

Now, after having the host support change collation from latin1_swedish_ci to utf8_general_ci, and my going through an modifying all tables in the database, I now have this save issue.
