Don't feel too bad; I do this kind of thing all the time, and usually find my error about 10 seconds after submitting a post! I do try to avoid excessive language, since all too often I end up eating my words.

I don't see why an extraneous slash should bother saving a template, though. MODx doesn't care what's in your templates. Besides which, HTML 5 permits closing slashes; they're optional. So I think your problem must have been something else.

I can hardly believe it myself

Centered div for a simple holding page, I stripped it back to this to try and identify the problem and after three hours of trying to figure out why the image was still appearing in the corner and becoming convinced that even though it said it was using my template that it wasn't I would have blamed Father Christmas for the presents, can you see the obvious mistake? This job honestly....lol [ed. note: philsdesign last edited this post 14 years, 2 months ago.]

For your code to be properly displayed here, you need to use the 'code' tags (the < > button in the editor toolbar).

So the template was being saved, it just wasn't displaying as you expected. Different problem altogether.

It's always a good idea to run it through the validator, even if that means copy/pasting the HTML from a "view source" of the offending page.

I have three items on my browser's bookmarks bar, one for the W3C validator, one to a site that generates lovely random passwords, and one for the MODx forums. That shows you my priorities! [ed. note: sottwell last edited this post 14 years, 2 months ago.]

I really should have validated it, it would have turned it up at once with w3c, I was so convinced I had found an even more bewildering form of the template bug I never even thought of it, fool that I am. My cup runneth over with syntax errors

That's what I thought!!! But these two are apparently quite different animals.
