Solr has apparently been a big culprit in the forum performance issues and has now been temporarily disabled. Notifications should be back on too. Now the UX updates begin … look for awesomeness on this front soon! Thanks for your patience, everyone.

It sure looks a lot smoother now. Still not blazingly fast, but am not seeing as much 504's. We'll get there! laugh

A search inside forum with "package" or "modx" as keyphrases gives no results !

is it related to the disabling of Solr ?

No single word searches are working. Multiples kinda work.

The search here in the forum is underwhelming at best, even when working. You'll get far better results using google and inserting MODX after every search string. Or to search the forums only at google, use "site:forums.modx.com YourSearchQuery"

Does this mean we should avoid SOLR on our sites?

Cariboo, the temporary disabling of Solr means that search will not return results. I'd recommend using google with the syntax Frogabog recommended: "site:forums.modx.com search word or phrase" until restored. We're aiming at getting it resolved ASAP. Further to that we will be reviewing the search configuration for reinstatement to offer better weighting and relevance.

Mark, this doesn't mean you should avoid SOLR on your sites. Solr is one of the fastest search engines out there, however, there are many performance factors to consider when using it on high traffic websites related to indexing. We will be reinstating Solr but only after refactoring the way it works with the forums. There are hundreds of new posts every day and hundreds of thousands of records over 7 years here. This is not your average website.

Hey folks. I am happy to say we have search back. We've temporarily opted to use Google Site Search. This will enable you to find all the posts you'll need with relative speed without sacrificing performance on the forums while we are refactoring and improving the forums. I am going to create a new thread called. Forum Improvements Progress in which we'll post when there are fixes and changes. If there will be interruptions while implementing changes we'll post in a new thread.

                    Cheers,

                    Jay

And now we've also turned back on the message notifications as well. So in summary, a few big pain points should be better now:

                      • New posts/replies are much faster, although still a bit slow (due to subscription handling)
                      • Search should be functioning well with a Google Custom Search
                      • New replies/thread subscriptions notices are now going out

Up next, tackling some long overdue UX/UI issues, and other optimizations.
