stumped....
disabled a bunch of apache modules - compiled a newer php.
testing on my local server it's easily 2x faster....
only about a second improvement....
I guess it's time to try a new host?

@AMDbuilder and I can set you up with a free trial at SkyToaster so you can see if the environment really is the issue. About 90% of what we host is MODX powered and all of the servers are configured to run MODX. If you are interested, PM either one of us, Skype us at skytoasterllc or email.
PS: I don't like to talk badly about other hosts but we have only had bad/slow experiences with the MT + MODX combination.

Thanks, I'd definitely like to take you up on that offer & see once and for all if environment is the issue... I'm loath to leave them it's been 5 years [or more] of rock solid uptime and great service, though just lately this past month there have been issues & wait time on tickets has been going up steadily over the past several months. I think 'something' has happened there with their tech staff.....

Sill fighting with this issue, now I'm trying to tweak mysql/pdo
in config.inc.php I've added:
$driver_options = array (
PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE => PDO::ERRMODE_SILENT,
PDO::ATTR_PERSISTENT => true,
PDO::MYSQL_ATTR_USE_BUFFERED_QUERY => true
);
I don't see a difference, is this actually forcing modx to use a persistent connection?
Any suggestions for tweaking mysql? [I've already increased it's various query caches & buffers etc]

Not quite willing to throw in the towel yet, been with them for just over four years... have never had a serious problem. And it's so nice to get support guys who actually know what they are doing.
One of the MY guys chirped in on twitter yesterday & looks like they are looking at it as well ... DV3x are nearing end of life this year so will be ignoring them & testing on DV4.0
Maybe I can build a custom php.cgi just for modx sites? we'll see. I'll get to the bottom of this.

I followed this thread and wound up switching to SkyToaster.
I found that SkyToaster is much faster. I always felt the Revo sites were slow compared to Evo. Not so with SkyToaster. My Revo sites speed along much faster than at MT.
So much so that I'm now taking a critical look at which pages need caching and which don't; and I'm exploring Revo like never before knowing whatever I'm doing isn't going to slow it down.
There were hiccups in the transfer and that was due to how my MT account was setup. There was something wrong with it and repeated attempts to get to the bottom didn't resolve it.
Hopefully you get it resolved. Site transfers can be stressful. Patrick at SkyToaster did an amazing job though. If you switch, delete the core/cache in every domain beforehand.
