Why is Revoloution so slow?

There is not need to remove the background.

I merely suggested that would be one way to reduce the size of the page.
I also suggested compressing the png (no loss of quality) - I used Squeezer, it is a simple GUI for OptiPNG http://optipng.sourceforge.net/, a command line app
And I said it is possible to save as a jpg - lossy compression which in this case is probably unnoticeable and results in a even smaller file.

While jpg is often a better choice than png this is not always true - an image with text, line art or graphics can be better as a png

An aside: I think Adobe Fireworks compression % numbers do not correspond with other programs % numbers for jpeg compression.

I agree 100% with you whistlemaker, I didn't read your post with enough attention.

Of course, that's true. Sometimes it's a matter of saving the image in different formats and see what works best. In this case I think it is better to use a JPG.

Interesting, did you read this somewhere? I love Fireworks compression because I can save an image with good quality and very small filesize, I think that Fireworks is much better than Photoshop for saving images for the web.

The problem with JPG is that (AFAIK), it won't work in a CSS sprite. It's too bad, because in my experience JPGs are often *much* smaller than PNG files. OTOH, the image is probably cached on the server and in the user's browser, so it doesn't make that much difference what size it is and the HTTP request count is much more important than the file sizes anyway.

I have not used Photoshop in years but from what I have read PS is not good about saving compressed/optimized files - Fireworks apparently is better.

Here is one of the articles I read http://ivomynttinen.com/blog/the-endless-fireworks-vs-photoshop-battle/ - it states that fireworks is much better at optimizing image files - though it suggests using something else even better to compress PNGs - either ImageOptim ( a MacOS 10 program) or http://punypng.com/ a web service.

Interesting - I had a copy of ImageOptim on my computer and ran the big background png through it - 103KB reduced to 35KB, 66% smaller
And running my 80% 26KB jpg through it resulted in a <13KB file
And it is interesting that a 100% quality optimized jpeg file was almost exactly the same size as the optimized PNG

Thanks, that's great info whistlemaker. I'll have to try optimizing some of my PNG files. Some of them seem to be much bigger than they need to be.

But why serve up a >100KB file when a 35KB looks exactly the same? It take very little time and even less skill to use ImageOptum, just drag an image file onto its window and it does the rest - not even time to get a cup of coffee.

HTTP request count is much more important

Once logged in (a Revo 2.2.2 install) selecting a different resource to edit results in 57 requests and 87KB transferred and it is "not snappy" --- Is this too many requests, but is there anyway they can be reduced; 87KB is not a large transfer

I don't think there's anything you can do as a user to change the number of requests made for a Manager page, but I could be wrong.

Sadly, ImageOptim is Apple only and I don't have one.

Manager CSS / JS compression always seems to break my manager, but Minify does have the option to group multiple external files into one combined file.

I'm not sure if that's been implemented but that would certainly cut down the number of requests.

A nice solution for Windows is RIOT.
It's portable and easy to use.
