When i say changing it back again, it was originally displaying the username, and to activate furls i basically left it blank. Just a question, have i just lost my clients site and xxx-week's worth of work?

Before making more changes I think it is better if you make a ftp&database backup.

I remember I had this kind of problems when I moved a website online, then I run the set up as said in the tutorial and it started working again.

What do we have to do to convince you to run Setup again? wink

It won't harm your current content -- honest.

There's almost no chance that you've lost anything. You can check the database to make sure, but the odds are that the paths are just pointing to the wrong place. Just don't panic and do something rash.

Thanks for all your replies here, in the end i got my host company to perform a roll back of my server to a previous point in time, by 15 hours and this got everything back. So now my modx site is back where it was moments before i messed this up and tried to activate seo furls. I'd say my problem arisen from not knowing what process to follow at the point of the modx site being ready to go live on a temporary domain and pointing client domain to it.

So now i know i have to re-run set up, and will start again and hopefully this time it'll work out.

To implement FURLs, you only need to do two things (but both are required before things will work).

            1. Change the FURL System Setting to turn them on

            2. Rename ht.access to .htaccess in the MODX site root.

You may also have to adjust the rewrite base in the .htaccess file, but usually not.

Cheers Bob, This is exactly what i did to enable furls once the site was live/ client domain was pointing to it and they worked fine. However the step i obviously missed out was running setup again at this point. Just to confirm, once a site is ready to have a client domain pointed to it, and it's live, before i enable seo furls, i should first run set up again.. and this will not affect all the content, settings, users and permissions i've built up...

And the reason for doing this is so that the url's for all pages or the web address i'd previously been using to view the site- no longer reads the temporary url. For example ip-address/~username/seo-friendly-url-gere.html then becomes the-actual-domain.com/seo-furls-here.html

One other point, maybe should be in a different post- is there a good way to have some kind of back-up or roll back facility in modx for both me and client/ site editors to use? Just so as to protect any pages a client may mess up.

It's on the roadmap, but I don't know how long it's likely to be. I'm glad you got it sorted.

You could use CronJob and make a database backup each day with plugins like Databackup, but I know you're asking about something else smiley

I'm a modx newbie obviously, so this is all new ground, but no backup mechanism is a worry for me, i'd look into any possible solutions and certainly your suggestion microcipcip
