The relevance and longevity of Evo

Hello,

I have built numerous sites in MODx Evo and I absolutely love it.

I am due to start working asap on a couple of new sites for clients, one of whom has come to me because their previous agency advised them that their CMS was out of date and that they were no longer supporting it with security updates etc and that they should develop a new site. I am keen to avoid such a situation in the future with the client.

I am keen to keep using Evo if it is still relevant and just want some official guidance from someone on the MODx team re the longevity of Evo.

Great to see the Evo 1.0.6 update, that is great news. Prior to that, the last Evo 1.0.5 update was Jan 2011, about 14 months earlier.

Are we nearing the end of the Evo era or will it be supported for many years to come? If so, are we talking 2 years, 5 years, indefinitely?

I'd like to make sure that future client sites I build are built with a CMS that is still supported and still relevant.

Whilst I hope to keep using Evo I am a little nervous to do so if it is going to be left behind and become obsolete within the next couple of years.

Is there any official word on the longevity of / future support of Evo from the MODx team?

I have posted in the forum looking for official MODx comment (https://forums.modx.com/thread/?thread=1715&page=15) but as yet have received no official response from MODx.

I also sent attempted to contact the MODx company via the contact form on http://modx.com/company/contact/ last week but as of yet have not heard back.

This is an important business decision for me, and I am sure for many users, and one that I would really, really appreciate clarification.

Officially, security patches will still be supported by the MODx team.

Thanks for the heads up re the "group getting organized to take over the support and development of Evo." I am watching this very closely and am very excited about it.

I just have concerns from a business viewpoint about Evo, given MODx officially seems to be putting everything into Revo.

Is there a timeline on official security patches for Evo or are you talking indefinitely?

I don't really represent the core MODx team; I'm sort of an honorary Jewish grandmother

However, I do try to keep up with what's going on, and do what I can to provide what seems to me interesting bits of improvement. The group getting organized to continue development of Evo does have the official blessing and support of the MODx leaders.

That's good news re MODx officially blessing the mobilizing of the new Evo improvements.

I take that to read the MODx organization is full steam ahead on revo with absolutely nothing on evo but...:

• if the community wants to take the reigns of Evo (as it has been since Stefanie started "Bringing Evo back to life") that's fine as long as they meet certain criteria for development, some of which sound a little restrictive for significant Evo improvement.

There is no silence here. We have responded with what we feel is a sound strategy for allowing the community to continue with Evolution development under the MODX brand. There is nothing in the strategy that prevents any reasonable and practical feature additions from being added to Evolution. We are simply asking the community to step up and help us manage the process in a manner similar to ours, since we do not currently have the resources to do so.

As for the MODX Team, we are full steam ahead on MODX. Evolution and Revolution are simply implementations of the MODX CMS project as a whole, and what it stands for:

Creative Freedom through flexible tools that serve your content, your way.

Our goal is to continue evolving and improving MODX for this purpose and this ultimately has little to do with Evolution OR Revolution. What is important to us, is that the experience for the users of any MODX branded product is the best it can be and continues to improve upon the features and standards we have established over the life of the project.

FWIW, I will be taking some of my own time to review what is going on and make some more detailed comments on the massive changes being combined together for mass inclusion. I am pleading with those interested in getting these changes incorporated to attempt to get this done using our process, isolating what can be easily. But if extraordinary measures are required because of the sheer quantity of changes, then I will do whatever I can (within reason) to help get them incorporated as long as they meet the other guidelines and standards.

That sounds wonderful and is definitely where I am coming from too. I want one awesome, kick ass, unified, stream-lined MODx CMS, not 2 different versions which still each have their pros and cons. I don't care what its called - just how it functions.
