Before you do anything else, I would go into PhpMyAdmin and 'export' the MODX database to a SQL file. That way, you'll have some version of your data and, as a last resort, you can create a new install and cut-and-paste the resource content from that file.

That said, unless your site has been hacked, there's a good chance that everything if fine and there's just a misconfiguration. First and foremost, the database credentials in the file:

    core/config/config.inc.php are wrong.

If you correct them, everything may be fine.

The database name, database username, and database password are there and *they are incorrect*. (note that they are completely unrelated to the username and password you use to log in to the MODX Manager). There's a good chance that that is causing all the problems you're seeing.

If you're not sure what they should be, check with your host.

Correct those before trying anything else.

You'll know they are correct when you don't see the red error message when running
    http://www.information-emporium.co.cc/setup.

Okay. I'm getting the hang of this, trust me wink

I have the setup file still there (I know this is dangerous) because I was told to run the setup again.

I have already done a backup of ALL databases in myPHPadmin.

I looked at the config.inc.php file and the '$database_password' value was an old password, because I did a manual password reset (using a PHP query).

Tried the setup again, and still no luck.

Then I remembered, ht.access file in "core" has the following code to prevent unwanted snooping:

      IndexIgnore */*
      <Files *.php>
          Order Deny,Allow
          Deny from all
      </Files>

Is it that rule that is causing communication difficulties?

(Again I have done a FULL backup (files and database) to my local hard disk, so if this buggers up I'll just restore the files back)

Ignore that that hasn't changed anything.

        I did find this though:
        http://support.hostgator.com/articles/cpanel/how-to-change-the-password-of-your-cpanel-account

Do NOT uncheck the box for "Allow MySQL password change". (This does not reset any passwords for your database users; rather, it keeps you able to login to phpMyAdmin and Fantastico De Luxe via cPanel.)

I can't remember exactly, but once I did reset my password - it might have changed the passwords to the databases, being the reason why they can't connect...

          HOORAAAY

I've fixed it. Without an ugrade.

          I'll outline what I did:

          • Restored my backup of modx. Overwriting any problems
          • Navigated to config.inc.php
          • Changed the database_password value to my new (reset) password
          • Logged in as normal

For ALL hostgator + modx users. When you change your password via cPanel (if that be done by yourself or by support, in my case) it will STOP you from accessing your MODx dashboard.

To solve the issue find the config.inc, php file in core/config, open it with a generic code editor and change the line:

          $database_password = 'oldpassword'

          to

          $database_password = 'newpassword'

This will repair any database conflicts.

Very happy, thank you to all of the members of the community who have helped me.
