I don't really have a problem with the "core".
    What about the Addons?
    Modx without Addons is nothing.
I really don't see how some developers think Addons are somebody else's problem.
Oh we'll just do the core, now focus on the core, more core, redo the core, rework the core, the core, the core, the core!
How about Addons that work and are updated regularly?!

I don't understand what you mean, can you be more specific?

Nobody said that addons are somebody else's problem. Both Evo/Revo are OpenSource projects, the "core" team work on the core and the addons are developed by the community and by anyone willing to contribute. What is wrong with that? Remember that these are OpenSource projects and nobody get paid for developing and supporting addons.

Well, this topic is about Evo so I am referring to Evo addons. More specifically as an example you can check Ditto and Jot which are both abandoned.
You can check the ecommerce addons which are bugged and some don't work. It's a mess.
I am abandoning Modx as a development platform because the "Core" is useless by itself and the EVO addons are abandoned with no future.

@BobRay: You are going back to a discussion, that is finished for me. I will not go to develop for or with Revo, because Revo does not fit my needs.

Stefanie, that seems like a pretty extreme position. So even if Revo were modified to meet all your needs you still wouldn't use it?

Be careful what you promise, I once swore that I would never use a mouse on my computer because it didn't meet my needs. wink

At the moment I don't see any advantage for me in Revo. If it had one of the features I wanted to have in the core, versioning and multilanguage, than it had a real chance to be the successor of Evo, but it hasn't.

On other projects, where I haven't used Evo, it was one the big frameworks and Revo was out of question in all of that projects, as a ORM wrapper I definitely prefer Doctrine2. But to be honest, I'm not a fan or ORM for RDBMS, because one castrates the possibilities, RDBMS are offering. When I really want and need that objects as objects in the database, I take PostgreSQL with JavaScript on the database (there is Google V8 implementation) and use JSON directly on the database. That way you get the object power one needs, not with ORM wrappers.

But yes, one should never say never, some years ago I thought that PHP would never be a "real" programming language.

You are one of guy, if you are not pleased with what you get, you have the possibility to work on them by yourself, or pay someone to do so, because it is open source.

Ditto works very well, is stable and has a ton of features, why should be updated? Jot, the same. A snippet need an update when it's broken or when you need to add new features that are essentials for the development of the website.

Ecommerce plugins have never been good in both platforms, although you may be able to build a cool e-commerce with FoxyCart. For a complex ecommerce solution is always better to use a fully featured CMS like OpenCart, PrestaShop, or Magento.

LOL. That attitude is one of the things wrong with Modx.
Actually I won't waste my time with that anymore since Evo is on the way out and has been abandoned too but will use Joomla! instead which is open source too but much better supported and did not come up with an incompatible Revo-Joomla!.

              You forgot Zencart.

@modxjr1, you are free to use any CMS you want, nobody is telling you to use Evo or Revo. MODX is good because is incredibly flexible and has a cool templating system, not just for the addons.

What you don't understand is that addons are made by people, and they are available for free. Many Joomla addons are not free, and anyway, there is a huge difference in the size of the community so it is not fair to make a comparison in this respect.

BTW, did you read this 40 pages thread before saying that Evolution is abandoned?

Just for the sake of transparency, Jason Coward (opengeek) is reviewing everything on the Evo project in Github this week and we'll get back to you with feedback on that, along with a strategy to move forward in whatever form that makes sense.

Isn't that like letting the fox into the hen house? lol

Good luck with Joomla!, where you have to pay to get the real good extensions.

And what ever Jason does, he has the right to do so, because it is open source. [ed. note: Stefanie last edited this post 14 years, 4 months ago.]

MODx does belong to MODx LLC, and whatever they want to do with it is their privilege, open source or not. I personally have deep appreciation for what Ryan, Jason et. al. have given us over the years with MODx (Evo, at any rate).

I may not be happy with the direction "they" have taken MODx, but I have no quarrel with their right to do as they please with their own product. Fortunately, MODx is open source, so that gives me (and anyone else) the right to also do as we please with it (within the limits of the GPL, of course).
