There are so many changes between 095 and 096, that if the upload didn’t happen right I’m fairly certain it would die a horrible death.

I realized (doh) that I have the extracted 096 archive on my local machine that I used to update the remote. I just copied all the files from it to my localhost site directory. It can’t be bad because I used it to update the remote site which is working fine in 096.

Still the same results. I can run the manager fine and I can run install, but I can’t view a single file without a blank screen and Apache crash, although I can view a non-MODx index.php in that directory with php code in it just fine.

I tried creating a new, empty template in the manager with nothing in it but some text and made it the default home page. Same blank page, same server crash.

I tried putting some debugging echo’s in the MODx index.php but none of them execute, even at the beginning of the file. The only thing I can guess now is that just loading and/or parsing index.php crashes the server.

I can’t think of anything to try next other than upgrading XAMPP to the current version or going back to 095.

You guys don’t have a "minimal" MODx index.php laying around do you? I don’t suppose the 095 index.php would work with 096?

Honestly, get the latest XAMPP and try it. 5.1.1 is a horrible release of PHP that is bug-ridden; in fact I wouldn’t use anything before 5.1.6/4.4.4. But regardless, it should not be crashing Apache; that smacks of a configuration problem with either PHP or MySQL.

The fact that I am running 0.9.6 on various versions of XAMPP without any similar problems makes me think you have something important missing or misconfigured; I just don’t know what... huh

        Bingo!!! laugh

The XAMPP upgrade seems to have fixed everything. Since it was an upgrade install, I don’t think any config files were changed. I think I was using all the default config files anyway. Something in 096 must trigger one of the bugs in the older XAMPP suite.

Thanks so much for all the help. You guys are the greatest!
