I upgraded to 0.9.6 on my remote site and it’s running fine.

So far, I haven’t been able to do it on my home machine.

I had 0.9.5 working fine on localhost with Xampp’s Apache, php, and mysql on Win XP.

I downloaded all the working 0.9.6 files from the remote and transferred the database files (after emptying the local database).

When I go to the local site, I get a blank screen and a frozen progress bar (I tried both IE and Firefox).

When I try to log in as a manager, I usually get the manager login screen, then the blank screen after I click on the login button.

I’ve tried an upgrade install several times and it runs with no errors and drops me into the manager ok. If I try to edit a document or preview the site, I get the blank screen again.

Often, trying to go to the local site seems to kill localhost and, sometimes, my internet connection as well so I have to reboot.

I editeded the configuration settings and saved them. I used my old .htaccess file which had a rewrite rule for localhost. If I put a new minimal index.html file in the root of the localhost site, it works fine so the .htaccess seems all right.

I tried the auto_prepend_file fix but it had no effect.

I’ve re-downloaded and installed the database info several times in case it was corrupted, again with no effect.

I notice that there is now a cgi-bin directory I hadn’t noticed before and I’m wondering if 0.9.6 runs something in cgi mode that I’m not configured for on localhost?

I’m probably doing something dumb here but the blank screen doesn’t give me much help in diagnosing the problem.

    Any ideas appreciated...

    Bob

MODx doesn’t use the CGI bin. Sounds like a corrupt download or htaccess problem. Did you reset the configuration parameters and double check to make sure you don’t have different encodings/collations in your DB between the local/remote servers?

I do have some charset/collation weirdness but didn’t think it would cause that much trouble. Also not sure what to do about it.

On the remote, the database defaults are utf8.

In the MODx remote database, some tables are Latin1_General_ci and some are Latin1_Swedish_ci.

In the export file, everything seems to be Latin1_General -- no Swedish.

The local machine has these settings in server variables:

        Session value/global value
        character set client utf8 / latin1
        character set connection utf8 / latin1
        character set database latin1 / latin1
        character set results utf8 / latin1
        character set server latin1 / latin1
        character set system utf8 / utf8
        collation connection utf8_general_ci / latin1_general_ci
        collation database latin1_general_ci / latin1_general_ci
        collation server latin1_general_ci / latin1_general_ci

Strangely, the local MODx db has mixed latin1_general and latin1_swedish like the remote.

I know next to nothing about charsets and collation and the more I read on it, it seems, the less I know.

I’ll go check again on the .htacces file and the configuration. Just how much trouble am I in on the character encoding?

Just change the $database_connection_charset value in your config.inc.php to latin1 and you’re done.

            Thanks Jason,

I checked and it’s already set to latin1, so I guess that’s not going to solve my problem.

I’ve found that if I restart the local Apache service, I can log on to the manager and edit resources and pages with no trouble until I try to preview anything. That hoses Apache again.

Does logging on to the manager bypass the site-root .htaccess file?

Is there an auto_prepend_file specified in your PHP configuration?

Is there an auto_prepend_file specified in your PHP configuration?

I’m not sure, but I applied the fix for that (commenting out line 43 and adding $noparser=false) and it didn’t help.

Here’s the output I get in Firebug. I don’t see anything very helpful in it, but somebody here might. It’s really frustrating because every attempt to visit the site hoses both Apache and sometimes the browser program itself. Makes trying thing out slow going as every try requires an Apache restart.

                Firebug output:

Are you using XAMPP? If not, can you try that? If Apache is segfault’ing on any request to a web page, it sounds to me as if you have a misconfiguration between Apache and PHP or PHP and MySQL. I’ve had similar problems in the past related to MySQL client configuration issues, as well as when trying to execute some components that were dependent on a specific OS platform in some way or another.

I am using XAMPP. It worked fine with 0.9.5 and I haven’t changed anything that I know if. The minimal index.php I tried worked fine. It has php calls in it so it seems Apache and PHP are working ok together. The fact that the manager works fine and I can edit templates, snippets, chunks, etc. ought to tell us something. My .htaccess is pretty vanilla and it worked with 0.9.5. I wouldn’t think I could edit things in the Manager with a bad .htacces file.

I think I have php 4 on the remote and php 5 locally but I’m assuming that 5 will handle anything that comes out of a php 4 database. I’m sure lots of people are running 0.9.6 with php 5 or we’d have heard about it by now.

Maybe the next step is to start out with an empty template for a home page and, if that works, start adding my snippet calls to it until it breaks.

I’ve transferred the files more than once but I used FileZilla for the first time because WS_FTP LE doesn’t allow overwriting newer files. It could just be a missing or corrupted file or a mismatch between 0.9.5 and 0.9.6 files, but I wouldn’t think that would hose Apache so badly.

                    Bob

There are so many changes between 095 and 096, that if the upload didn’t happen right I’m fairly certain it would die a horrible death.
