Access denied and log out issues for admin user

So my hosting provider says, "A sessions issue with the environment? Why would it only boot out in certain browsers unless the session timeout was set in the browser (it's not)."

From my testing it's not "certain browsers," it's all browsers (IE7, IE8, IE9, FireFox 12, Safari 5.1). And forget about doing anything from Safari. And I can't view any reports or most Settings.

So what kind of session handling do we need for MODx? Maybe we can approach it from that angle.

You need a working PHP environment that meets at least these requirements. Other than that, you've provided no information that could help us diagnose what in your environment is not setup properly to be able to run MODX.

The original post reported a problem managing MODx running in Rackspace Cloud Site. I have the same problem running in OnApp Cloud. While I await response from the host company on server requirements is there value in discussing whether MODx can even be run in a cloud (or virtual server) environment?

No, there are many deployments of MODX Revolution in many different environments, including so-called "cloud" environments.

FWIW, the word "cloud" is just a fancy word for hosting, and is quite meaningless on it's own. Issues on one "cloud" environment may be completely unrelated to another because there is no standard "cloud" hosting definition. This is why we need details about the environment to assist.

Generally, sporadic session behavior like was described by the OP can be attributed to bad PHP session configurations, especially in environments that use some type of load balancer to distribute requests to multiple web nodes. But, again, the more details we have about the OnApp environment, the better we'll be able to help.

I have been able to see more in Manager today before getting booted. I looked at system info and do see a couple discrepancies with the server requirements you posted. register_globals is on and magic_quotes_gpc is on. Can these settings be chaged in MODx or does the server host have to change these?

I don't know if the problem at hand is preventing me from viewing the error log in Manager or if it is too large. Is there anyway I can purge the error log outside of Manager?

My site host tells me I need to change settings for register_globals and magic_quotes_gpc in my .htaccess file. But I find conflicting info on the Internet as how to do this. Anyone have suggestions for me?

Also, even though I added the following lines to my .htaccess file it appears the sessions are still not being stored to the tmp directory. session.save_path as reported by phpinfo() shows the proper path, but shouldn't I be seeing files in that directory while poking around Manager?
