I have a new Revo site running for an Alumni group.

I created a private, hidden from navbar menu "members" page that will only appear when approved web users have logged in. I am using the Login snippet for the login page. I am using the Peoples snippet to manager the web users on the "members" page. I have a created a user group, users, roles, document group, etc, to make it all happen. With some tips from Bob Ray I have it all working very nicely.

Right now all the approved users can do is login and view all the member contact cards on the private "members" page that are generated by the Peoples snippet. The next thing I want to add is the ability for each web user to create and edit their own little area on the "members" page. I am ok with creating the TVs that will make this happen. The question is which building blocks do I need to use snippet wise?

I want a system that presents a recognition on the private "members" page once registered users have successfully logged in. Right now the Peoples snippet is checking this. Once in I want a message that says "hey Joe, would you like to create your own page?" and then give them the option for doing so, probably with a TinyMCE TV that will allow them to create titles, paragraphs, and add photos. Then all of these pages should be presented dynamically on the "members" page for all other logged in users to see but only the author of the individual page himself will be able to edit their own created content. I would also like other registered users to be able to comment on these private pages that have been produced by their fellow registered users…

Any tips or roadmap via snippet chose would be most welcome.

Thanks! [ed. note: Photowebmax last edited this post 14 years, 9 months ago.]

Just thinking out loud here: odds are the only a few people will contribute to these pages. I am wondering if installing the new Articles snippet might be easier and less work? Looks like I would have to upgrade to the new 2.2 version of Revo though as I installed 2.1.5.

Getting back to this: would adding a comments system using Quip work for these pages? But I also want these users to originate their own content and then allow others to comment...

Yes, I think Articles would work but you would have to upgrade to 2.2.

I think you could also use NewsPublisher and put an edit button on the user's page that would only appear for that user. It would be a little tricky, but should be doable assuming that the user group name can be generated from the username of the current user.

Thanks Bob, I will try taking a look at NewsPublisher. I did achieve success with the Articles system on a different site but that site does not have web users and the Peoples snippet.

I would really like to build on what I have: a working system that uses the Peoples snippet, with set up roles, groups and private documents. The links to the private documents do not even show until the web users login using the Login snippet. Once they have logged in I would like to give these users the ability to create threads and then invite comments from other recognized users that are connected to the Peoples snippet. I know this can be a slippery slope but I want to keep it as simple as possible without building a social media system or adding a web forum application.

              OK, this shows real promise...

              * I installed NewsPublisher and created a resource called News with the following basic call:
              [[!NewsPublisher]]

              * I then created two test posts from the front end and it works.

              * I then adjusted my Login page and added the &loginResourceId for the NewsPublisher page. This also works. Once my web users login they will see the link in the navbar for the NewsPublisher page.

              Issues:

** I need to adjust the default CSS for the generated navbarInner ul that drops down for the post links from the News page link in the navbar.

** My NewsPublisher resource is connected with my template but the child posts are picking up the default MODX Revo template? How do I make sure that my posts pick up the template I want?

** Instead of generating a ton of post links in the navbar (not really wanted) how do I just have the links presented in the parent document (aggregation) itself?

** Can I add an automatic comments system using Quip to the bottom of the NewsPublisher posts themselves?

              Thanks!

I don't really know how well Articles would integrate with your current structure. I haven't had time to play with it.

I *think* NewsPublisher would work. Here's what I would try: Install NewsPublisher and put this tag in the template for the user's pages:

                [[!NpEditThisButton]]

The button should only appear on pages the user has the right to edit and should take them to a form that lets them edit the resource. When they save it, they'll be redirected back to the resource.

I'm not sure how it would work with the comments (If you want them to be editable).

I really like Articles, but I would prefer to keep the users out of the Manager. Seems like NewsPublisher is a step in the right direction? Depends on how the user created content gets aggregated though.

Shaun has done a marvelous job with Articles though...

I changed the name of the NewsPublisher page and now all I get is the following error message:

Sorry . . . There were one or more problems in producing the form: You do not have permission to create a document

I then deleted the entire resource and started again and I still get this error message? Puzzled at this time...

I can't remember the details, but I think uninstalling, removing, then re-downloading and re-installing NewsPublisher should fix that but don't change the name of the page for a while. wink

IIRC, it has to do with some problems with Package Manager that required me to search for the NewsPublisher page by name.
