Isn't it possible to have all Articles under only one Container and have another Container as Category-Tree

Than have a multiple-listbox-TV to select the Categorie(s) and a onDocFormSave-plugin which creates/removes Symlinks automatically under the Categories in the Category-Tree.

Isn't the simplesty way just to duplicate tags functionality to get Categories ?

Using tags for categories isn't a terrible idea, but it's not a proper, native solution that makes it easy for modx to be used for blogging as WordPress would be. It also doesn't support category hierarchy, which is important. WordPress' solution seems ideal, so we should endeavour to match or better it.

Another reasonable plan, but it's still a bit of a bodge fix for a system that doesn't have a real system for blog categories. It also still needs a new plugin to be developed, so it'll be a better use of time to do the job right. I gather that this plan also doesn't involve the use of 'Articles'. It'll be better overall to upgrade Articles to support a proper hierarchical category system, like WordPress. Then we don't need to worry about crowbarring stuff in using existing Modx concepts.

I'm all for using Modx's inherent power and flexibility to achieve interesting things on a low-level, granular basis, but at a certain point you need to draw a line and accept that a dedicated solution will always be superior, and without one Modx is behind when it comes to blogging. People may as well just use WordPress and have a separate login, or work to splice the two apps together to blur the boundaries.

Well, I didn't thought that code should be just 'copied' smiley without any changes.

Joining the chorus to here to say that the blog ==> category ==> tag taxonomy should be considered an imperative for the modX roadmap.

Some folks on this string have suggested categories are not necessary, and I totally disagree. It's true that some blogs don't need the more robust taxonomy, but many more examples exist where it's critical both to UX and SEO (particularly
              where a migration is involved).

Additionally, I say imperative because for modx adoption to grow, people developing on it must have a tool they can win business with.

Far more SMBs have experience with and/or exposure to Wordpress than modX. In my category, which is photography, the biggest website players in the space have integrated Wordpress.

For me--and I submit it's the same for anyone trying to win business with SMBs--the difference between getting that win or not from a small business owner can come down to whether his/her new modx blog 'works the same' as the old Wordpress blog.

I have found this absolutely to be the case, and for this reason parody with Wordpress's taxonomy, which is the standard, must be the goal. Anything else is folly.

Articles is an incredible start in that direction, but this string was started more than year ago. I humbly ask where the progress is on this?

The is certainly something Articles has always lacked. I think it is important to draw the distinction between Add-ons and the MODX core even with Add-ons like Articles that were authored by a core developer. This is something that should be on the MODX ecosystem roadmap but I'm not sure if MODX will ever ship with blogging features in the core.

Articles sat idle for sometime when resources were reallocated for MODX Cloud. Many Add-ons did actually. Since then many Add-ons including Articles have been adopted:
                http://modx.com/blog/2013/10/29/announcing-adopted-add-ons/

The Articles Roadmap has been rewritten but only contains "small wins" over the current version. Nothing like solving the category/taxonomy issue. That would require a rewrite and be Articles 2.0.

We are always keeping an eye out for contributors for Articles. I'd love to see the community get more involved with an Articles 2.0 because it is has always been open source but has been unable to utilize the community around it very well.

If you would like to discuss and help formulate the Articles 2.0 Roadmap we have a forum thread here:

From a development perspective, I'm unqualified to comment on whether this should be part of the core or not. Based on my experience developing on MODX, I can see where the flexibility of a robust add-on would be beneficial.

Me, too! I'm not a developer so cannot contribute in that fashion, but certainly will contribute ideas to the roadmap. I'll also gift anyone who solves with this a very nice bottle of bourbon. There, it has been said. Consider that a stake in the ground.
