I don't have CPanel or anything like that. PHPMyAdmin is installed and can login there with same credentials (username root with correct password). I did restart mysql and was able to login to mysql as root via SSH. So, the username and password work correctly both via SSH and in PHPMyAdmin.

It sounds like the permissions setup for the user in question and/or the database in question may be a little off. I would try creating a new user to interact specifically with that database.
