I'm working on a site that was ticking along well until just recently. Now when I try to link text (within the Resource Content or a tv), I'm getting an internal server error message. Have submitted a ticket with the host in case anything has changed there, is it possible I've done something within the CMS to cause this? I've not done anything that I think might cause this, only edited template variables and templates.

if i look in the error log, I see:
[2011-09-17 08:36:48] (ERROR @ /uci/connectors/element/tv.php) modTemplateVarTemplate: Attempt to set NOT NULL field rank to NULL

Have found the post at https://forums.modx.com/index.php?topic=24486.0 and not sure if this is the same thing, am a bit chicken to mess with htaccess files...

any help would be much appreciated.

If you haven't edited .htaccess or index.php, the most likely thing is that something has changed at the host. mod_security is the most likely culprit.

thanks for your help Bob. I've had a response from the host since i posted, they've disabled mod_security (did that last week as it was causing some other issues). with it being disabled, could that be an issue? they suggested we might be nearing our resource limit. do you think that could cause this?

I'm with Bob, mod_security is most likely to cause issues. You may also see issues if you are getting close to your memory limit depending on how your host defines these limits. Hard limits will cause problems, soft limits your host will ask you to upgrade.

Who are you hosting with, perhaps someone else has experience dealing with them.

If mod_security if really completely off, it probably isn't the problem, but hosts have been known to be wrong about it being off.

            Can you explain this further:

when I try to link text (within the Resource Content or a tv)

Are you getting the error when you try to save in the Manager, or when you try to view a page in the front end? Does it happen all the time, or just for some pages?

What exact version of MODX are you using?

I have had this happen when the Error page, Unauthorized page or the Site Unavailable page were messed up. For example, if the Unauthorized page is set to be a protected page, then it becomes an infinite loop, which the server will deal with in various ways depending on its configuration.

Thanks very much to all of you. To be a bit clearer (Bob), when i select words, then click on the link icon, in the popup window that appears, instead of it containing the normal linking info, i see a message in there about the Internal Server Error.
I'll get my boss, who set up the hosting, to check the limit she put on resources (thanks AMDBuilder), now that you mention that she set it quite low with another site and she may have done the same with this one. We're hosted with Digital Pacific.
Will also check the Error/Unauthorized etc pages as you suggest Susan. There are no protected pages that I am aware of unless the programmer (on holidays for a month hence me bumbling my way through this) has created them for some reason. Fingers crossed! Thanks very much again, really appreciate all your help.

That window is created by the TinyMCE editor plugin -- so there's a good chance that the problem is in TinyMCE rather than MODX. Make sure you have the latest version of TinyMCE and that it's for the version of MODX you're using (Evolution or Revolution).

Sometimes, when you upgrade MODX, you have to completely uninstall and remove TinyMCE and then reinstall it. This mostly happens with MODX Revolution, but it could be an issue in Evolution as well.

Thanks again Bob. It was working for a while though is the strange thing. And it was also working for another site we've made that is hosted on the same server (so both sites were sitting happily, then both were shifted to a new server, this caused issues saving modx changes, so the hosts disabled mod_security). The Tiny MCE editor is happy enough to insert images, it seems to be just the linking that is the issue.
Do you think it might still be a TinyMCE editor problem? With the programmer away even things like upgrading a plugin is new for me and am nervous uninstalling anything. Just googled and found i think your site Bob? says:
You need go to System | Package Management and click on "Download Extras." Then download TinyMCE and any other add-on componenents you need for your site. Then install them by right clicking on them and selecting "Install."
Any chance at all of me buggering anything up doing this?

just to be clearer, on the other site where the tinyMCE editor is not working properly, when i select text in Resource Content, then click on insert link icon, the popup window, instead of saying Internal Server Error actually shows the website, so a bit like a preview of the site in the popup. It did work initially though...?
