    Hi all, laugh

I tried out modx on my last project and things progressed slowly but managed to get my head around the basics and the site is looking great. Now I’ve got a larger project and have a few questions if modx has the capabilities to cover what my customer is looking for.

    Details of project:

-60 million page views a year, 20,000 registered members, pure information site
-can only guess but is over 1000 pages in the website, and many more to be added in the future
-There will probably be fifty to a hundred people with access to admin to make changes to different parts of the website. Also there will be a few hundred different user roles with access to varying information in the member only section. Security is a major concern. How secure is modx?
    - in the manager panel is there any way to limit the pages that are shown in the menu based on user permissions. I don’t want everyone viewing all thousand pages because it’s too confusing. Can I lock some pages from certain users?
-hundreds of reports, articles, PDF files, etc. using Ditto or a similar system. Are there stress limits to what Ditto can handle?
-Was thinking of newsletter snippet for emails but the client list is around 20,000 emails per week so imagine would have to outsource that to another program outside modx. Plus it looks like newsletter is abandoned. Any ideas?
-RSS news feed for a dozen different sections. Does modx have such a function?
-News also needs to be broken up into a dozen sections with different info in different sections with different user access
-ad space box on each page needs to rotate randomly between sponsors, but be easy to use in the admin. Actually there are many ideas floating around in my head with advertising space and will add more info when I decide on what path to take
-Dozens of forms that need to be added in the website and when submitted are added to a database section in the manager panel for easy viewing. Is it easy to change/add information that is displayed in manager? Also would like to add an analytics tool that graphs and makes viewable the different info in some forms. I don’t think this is available in modx, and I haven’t tackled something like this before, is it possible?
-pop up windows when mouse over on certain sections
-forum with different levels of access
    -method of payment for subscriptions
-Couple of polls and questionnaires. Again that can be analysed with an analytics tool to present graphs of findings in manager
-finally in the manager section wanted to add a professional grade wiki for online collaboration between different groups on different projects. Some groups would have up to 1000 users, and other groups could be as small as 10. This would need strict security measures. Basic document editing and maybe an online chat feature would also be nice. Think would have to look outside modx for this one. What would be involved in making this secure and available through the modx manager based on different users/roles?

My main concern is the stress loads on Ditto, modx in general and a integrating the other features with modx. I can only imagine this project would be possible with the modx team and support behind me to answer questions and give advice. I would be willing to make a sizeable contribution to the modx community for such support. Also it would be a great online project to document and possibly have a few features/reasons to expand modxcms capabilities.

Should I tackle such a project with modx?

Thanks in advance and I look forward to getting started

Ok it has been a couple days and not one reply. I’ll have to assume modx is not a suitable CMS for such a project.

Ditto 2 (RC2 or later) would be able to handle the high loads you are describing. Remember, it also does RSS feeds wink

Thanks, looking forward to Ditto 2, sounds great!

Do you have a rough idea when it will be released?

Obviously a very big project. It will probably take you a while to set it all up, by which time 0.97 (a completely redesigned xPDO-based system) should be thoroughly tested and publicly available. MODx already has pretty advanced caching abilities which would reduce server load quite a bit.

20,000 emails a week isn’t all that many. If your server can handle sending them then you can certainly send them via MODx. Keep in mind that it’s very easy to integrate other scripts into MODx, so you could use your favorite bulk mailer script from the MODx Manager if you like.

Currently most people use a separate forum script (SMF being one of the most popular), so you could either bridge the user database for that with MODx or keep them separate. You might end up doing the same with your wiki system. It all depends on how much work you want to do to make things exactly as you describe them (or whether you have some flexibility and can roll with some changes).

My first thought here is : you have a high requirement project, you need the best and you also want to help the project ?

Well... that’s what collabpad is here for smiley

                  Hi David,

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of colabpad. Had a brief look around the site, and it looks more of a marketing services company. For this project we already have the marketing plan firmly in place. My role is mainly management and marketing, with most of the programming outsourced to a small group of coders here in Beijing, China (Beijing because of cost advantages). I do try and get a little into coding but it’s not my specialty, time usually gets consumed with other areas of the business. Did not put in a high bid for this project because this is China, so margins are tight. Does colabpad offer programming services? I am open to all ideas on this project...

Collabpad is definitely not a marketing services company:

Collabpad offers custom development services centered around our Content Management Framework. Managed Hosting and Commercial Support provide additional resources for the ongoing development of our Open Source software.

Collabpad will also never compete with the type of prices implied, either. smiley
