You should be able to go to http://localhost/modx/ (this looks right). You can also just go to http://localhost:8888/ and browse through your files. You will probably see your MODx folder and the MAMP folder.

If MAMP has been configured to use port 80 then just going to http://localhost will provide a file listing, unless you have an index.php or index.html file in the root. Going to http://localhost/modx will show the home page of your MODx installation.

You’re right. I forgot to take out the :8888. Thanks for clearing that up.

The installer should automatically create the database for you; at least it did for me.
