By default, MAMP runs on port 8888 (if I recal correctly), so you have to do http://localhost:8888 to get it. You can set it to use port 80 if you prefer.

Make sure you are the owner of those files and you can read and write them.
I just dropped MODx in and it worked out of the box in MAMP...
Same here.
It looks like the php files aren’t being parsed by php at all, the php code is just being dumped to the browser.

as far as I know, you should still be using an http address to view the sites(files)...
on my windows box I type
http://localhost/
in the address bar and this works. your setup should be similar as you are actually running a web server and will need to access pages there just as if they were on the net.
