I’m not sure if I understand what you mean by "in one big bucket"... do you just mean that all the pictures would be in a same gallery or do you mean some specific view mode?
Anyways, there’s no problems in having all pictures in one gallery, just create one in some document, it can be a hidden document if you want. Then in other documents, you can use the &view_gallery parameter to view that gallery. You can use &order_by=`random` in the snippet call to have the images in a random order. If you want that when the gallery is accessed, it goes straight to the single image view, add &display=`pictureview` to the snippet call. If 3 picture sizes are enough for you, you can use the &max_big_size, &max_pic_size and &max_thumb_size parameters to define the sizes that you want. Then do a custom template for the picture view (&pictureTpl) and make it show the thumbnail by default.. what would be the "web" size. Then add download links for the normal size picture and big picture. The image paths are:
big picture: [(base_url)][+maxigallery.path_to_gal+]big_[+maxigallery.picture.filename+]
normal picture: [(base_url)][+maxigallery.path_to_gal+][+maxigallery.picture.filename+]
thumbnail: [(base_url)][+maxigallery.path_to_gal+]tn_[+maxigallery.picture.filename+]
