Yes,
latest version.
Sorry about that, your article mentioned Revo so I thought these were the bits for it.

Which Vanilla SSO plugin are you using? JSConnect, or ProxyConnect? Vanilla has deprecated ProxyConnect, and recommends using JSConnect instead.
At the moment Proxy Connect.
I tried JS connect, but that didn't work, but then again I wasn't entirely sure how to set it up.
So I reverted to ProxyConnect so I could follow along with your article.
I'll switch back to JS connect to see if I can get any further

OK,
when I go to my vanilla forum page it gives me the option to "sign in with forum" which I think is the Modx sign in option.
In any event when I click that it takes me to my standard login page.
When I login it takes me to my default member welcome page.
However when I navigate back to the vanilla forum it looks like I'm not logged in as it asks me to signin again.
Something must not be connected somewhere.
Thanks
However, If I press the signin button on the Vanilla page when it takes me to the login page Modx recognizes that I'm already logged in.

All I can say is that the article on sottwell.com is an exact description of what I did to get JSConnect to work.
The attached images show my JSConnect settings page (minus the two top fields that hold the "secret" codes) and how the Vanilla login looks when you are logged in to MODx.
The snippet code:
<?php
require_once('assets/libraries/functions.jsconnect.php');
$clientID = 'xxxxxxxxx';
$secret = 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx';
$profile = $modx->user->getOne('Profile');
$email = $profile ? $profile->get('email') : '';
$user = array();
if ($modx->user->isAuthenticated('web')) {
$user['uniqueid'] = $modx->user->get('id');
$user['name'] = $modx->user->get('username');
$user['email'] = $email;
}
$secure = true;
WriteJsConnect($user, $_GET, $clientID, $secret, $secure);

Thanks,
from what I can tell everything matches, it's just that the data isn't being fed back to vanilla once I login with Modx.
Must be one little thing out somewhere.
Leave it with me and I'll work on it today
Really appreciate your help sticking with me on this one.

If you load the jsonp page in your browser you should see something like this:
{"error":"invalid_request","message":"The client_id parameter is missing."}
This is because the AJAX request from Vanilla will supply some parameters, which it isn't getting if you load the page directly. But at least it shows that the snippet is working properly.

Hmm,
I'm back to a blank page again.

I named my snippet "loadVanilla" and have it uncached on a resource with no template:
Also, make sure you have the path to wherever you put the functions.jsconnect.php file correct.
Check your Reports -> Error Log to see if MODx is getting any errors when you try to run the snippet.
I'll check.
The other thing I've just noticed is that it doesn't matter what i put on the page or which template i use, nothing shows up when i view it.
Very strange.
