php_mbstring extension

For those who are interested, I just uploaded a UTF8 Field Length Protection plugin which warns when a manager field contains too many characters by changing its background colour to red. Works when the manager is UTF-8 encoded.

Ok guys... I read your posts and have no idea what you are talking about...

I found this post as I have the ’php_mbstring extension required’ message on a client site that I am redesigning...
he had search facility on the old/current version of his site so i will assume for now he wants one again.

How do I fix the problem.. does he need to get his host to fix/modify his PHP version or can I still get a search facility with a workaround?
Any ideas? I saw a mention of Jquery i have already used that on the site for image sliders... can Jquery do the work instead?

As far as I understand, the options are to use a previous version of AjaxSearch that doesn’t rely on php_mbstring (I think that 1.7.1 is the last version which doesn’t), or recompile your current version of php with php_mbstring, or upgrade your php to a more recent version which comes with php_mbstring by default.

In terms security and performance upgrading php to the latest version is the best option.

i have the same problem, after hours and hours of going through various cms systems i finally decided to go with Modx and how deflating when you get an error like this

however im pleased i have made the decision i have but my server is centos and can i find any help on it ,... nope

so if anyone has any suggestions how to sort this out i would be really grateful

You can download and use the older version of AjaxSearch that doesn’t require the PHP feature. The fact that your server is centos doesn’t have anything to do with the PHP on the server.

Read the parameter list, as I am 99% sure there is an option to disable mbstring in the latest release.

0 - don’t use php_mbstring extension

The php_mbstring is supposed to be loaded.
If html charset page is "UTF-8", php_mbstring extension should be loaded for language which need a multi-byte representation.
If the extension is not available for the PHP server, some charset like ISO-8859-1 (latin1) could be used.
With UTF-8, a message "Php_mbstring extension is required" when &mbstring=`1` and the extension not loaded.
In this case load the extension or set the mbstring parameter to 0 if you couldn’t load the extension

ok thanks for the help , i have searched and searched where to turn off the ajax search and even to download the older ajax search that does not require the php mbstring, can anyone tell me where to find either of these
