      Martyn, I do indeed host MODx sites on personalsites.org servers (but shhh, I’m a reseller). I have not integrated osCommerce or SMF on any of them, but I do put WordPress blogs inside MODx installations quite often, though I always use WP’s rewrite rules as well, so the WP .htaccess takes over on requests to the /blog subdirectory. I haven’t tried using .htaccess authentication with ReWrite rules; are you doing this using the CPanel Web Protect feature? If so, you might look at the order in the file; do the rewrite rules occur before or after the authentication? Also, do you always get through the authentication first try, or do you sometimes have to enter it twice to successfully authenticate?

        i do indeed get auth twice ( in some older oscommerce installs esp) but yes i am using the cpanel protect feature, (im a reseller also shhh), what should come first ? the protect or the RW off?

        :)

        as an aside .. whats the advantage of using wordpress inside modx? is it a better blog system than newslisting ?

        Ta smiley

          I am having this same problem, when I have a password protected page (for site stats via .htaccess) i get a 404.

          I tried turning the rewrite engine off but I still get the 404.

          Has anyone figured this out yet?

            You need to post the contents of your .htaccess file(s) and a description of your setup (the names of subdirectories and what’s in them) in order to debug this. .htaccess can be complicated and finnicky, especially where multiple rewrite rules are concerned. But there’s nothing in the MODx setup that would prevent you from having multiple rewrites and/or access restriction in multiple subdirectories with a little effort.

              Alright, hopefully someone can help.

              i have an /awstats/ directory off the root directory. It’s .htaccess file is as follows

              Options +ExecCGI
              AddHandler cgi-script pl
              DirectoryIndex awstats.pl
              RewriteEngine Off

              AuthUserFile <location of password file>
              AuthType Basic
              AuthName "AwStats Protection"

              <LIMIT GET POST>
              require valid-user
              </LIMIT>

              Is there anything else you would need?

              Thank you all...

                Are you sure that the path to your password file is correct? If it is popping up the username/password prompt but rejects anything that you give it, this is often the cause. I also don’t wrap my require valid-user in a limit, but I guess that should work also.
