Bob, could you file a bug report requesting more accurate error messages? Thanks!

I tried but when I tried to log in on the Bug Tracker page,
McAfee antivirus gave me a Trojan IE script warning. It identified the Trojan
        as:

        JS/Exploit-LocalCSS

I logged in in the forums without incident. I’ll try again.

I have a similar problem as described by BobRay. I’ve used phpMyAdmin to check whether the database has been created, doesn’t look like it, nothing beginning with modx.

So I want to check what to do next - because I don’t want to stuff anything up. I already have a number of tables associated with other database, so I am guessing that I have to create a new table: using phpMyAdmin.
          See red bits below:

Create new table on database artandtext :
          Name : modx
          Fields : how many?
          Charset : latin1 [GO]
Error: The additional Features for working with linked Tables have been deactivated. To find out why click here.
I hope this is not an issue.

So I just create the table, right? And then retry to installation. Do you think there’ll be username/password problems as suggested by Davy?

          thanks.

Umm.. You don’t have to crete a table, you have to create (or provide allready existing) database.

So, if you have the ability to create multiple databases on your database server (ie. there’s no limit set by the host or you havent reached it), create a new one for modx and make sure that one or more users are assigned to that database and they have sufficient rights (ie. create, drop, alter, update...tables).

Or if you can’t or don’t want to create another database, provide a name of the database you allready have in the MODx installation script. Then give the username/pass that has sufficient rights to the defined database and set some prefix for your tables. The installation script will then attempt to create the tables to that database.

So all you need to do is create a empty database for MODx to create your tables in, or provide allready existing database name. If you have set an existing database name and you have problems that the tables are not created, it’s probably issue with incorrect username/pass details or the user does not have sufficient rights to create the tables.

If you need more assistance, please provide better problem explanation (ie. error messages, etc.) and enviroment details.

              thankyou doze.
Indeed - the problem is, I am only allowed one database on the server I was trying. So I have installed ModX to a different server where I have multiple database access rights. Everything went fine.

Here is the error I receive:

Connection to host: passed... Checking database: failed - test does not exist!

                Does the database exist?
YES - I created the database and can manage it via phpmyadmin
Also, when I try the connection with the user name other than the root I get this message:

                Connection to host: failed!

Even though the user name and password is verified and correct.

                Environment:
                PHP5.1.6
                MySQL5.0.24
                Linux

                Browser: Firefox1.5.0.7
                OSX10.4.7

                Modx Install:
                Modx0.2.9.1

                The database host is: localhost
                database name: test

Thanks for any help in advance!

Have you tried to connect to that DB from some other PHP application, or how you know that it should work? Some hosts have their own tools what you have to use when creating users to databases.. sounds to me that the user does not have sufficient rights on that db.

Bob, thanks for troubleshooting this issue. Years later, I found that I was having the same dumb problem with creating a user.
