I’m trying to install MODx at my ISP. I created the MySql database myself and I can access it through the web tools at the ISP’s site.

But testing it during install gives a message saying the database does not exist.  If I continue, I get the following message. It appears that the connection to the database is "OK" but it doesn’t exist huh

Setup will now attempt to setup the database:

Creating connection to the database: OK!

Selecting database `softvi2_modx`: Database selection failed... The database does not exist. Setup will attempt to create it.

Creating database `softvi2_modx`: Database creation failed! - Setup could not create the database!

Setup could not create the database, and no existing database with the same name was found. It is likely that your hosting provider’s security does not allow external scripts to create a database. Please create a database according to your hosting provider’s procedure, and run Setup again.

    I’m officially baffled.

Did you create a database name on your server to be use by MODx before you install it? From what I see, the database is not exist on your mysql server, so MODx trying to create a new database, but the permission on your database user is not allowing the creation of new database, if it’s not exist yet.

Try to create a new database first, and run the installaer again.

      All the best

If you look more closely at my post, you’ll see that I did create the database first. You’ll also see that the installation script appears to have formed a successful connection to the database, right before telling me it doesn’t exist.

Please provide some environment information, and the details you are using to connect to the db (you can leave out the password). That should help us get a better picture of the issue you are encountering.

I’m reluctant to put all the info up here and risk having someone else install the web site. If you could email me, I’ll give you the whole ball of wax and you can see it for yourself.

            Thanks,

            Bob

Bob, you can send that info to Jason via PM.

The environment info we request for all support inquiries are PHP/MySQL versions, Server OS, Webserver type and version... not passwords and logins.

                    Davy,

                    Thanks for the tip.

Did you actually change the username and password in the database to match your main logon or just use them in the install?

                      Got it ...

It turned out that my ISP required a second, somewhat obscure, step to actually add the user to the database. It showed the user as a user of the DB but hadn’t actually done anything to the DB itself.

So, the database existed but had no users.

The messages generated by the install script were somewhat misleading. It kept telling me that the database didn’t exist. It also tried to create the database even though it had successfully established a connection to it.

If it had detected and reported that the "user" was missing, I would have solved the problem immediately.

Thanks to all who got involved in helping me find the answer. I’m really impressed by the level of support.

                      Bob
