Hi David, any idea what freenode server you connect to?

With being in the UK, I imagine that I connect through a european server so can check later to see if I get through on the server that you seem to be having problems with. (if that would help in anyway)

I don’t know exactly which server, Trillian connects through a random server each time it’s a different one...
I have a hard time pinning down the cause of the problem... maybe I’ll try a different client, just to be sure

          Thanks Garry !

/whois yournick - shows among other things which server you are using

I connected using irc.freenode.net and it selects a suitable server for me, oddly enough in this case it was one in the USA (the /whois command returned: "MrDutchy using zelazny.freenode.net Corvallis, OR, US"). I am connecting from the Netherlands though. Probably the server you get is random unless you specify precisely which one you want to connect to. Another possibility is that it automatically sends you to whatever server is the most idle one at that moment.

One thing you might want to check if you can sometimes connect and sometimes not is: The port it uses to connect, I suggest you use port 6667 which is the default irc port. Some clients (like Mirc for example) are set to select one port out of a certain range at random (like 6667-6669). This has caused problems for me before where it would only work whenever the selected port happened to be 6667.

Thanks a lot for the input, seems like it’s more of a firewall issue though, I am having this problem only at one specific location where I use my Mac with WiFi...

I have opened the port range, like I do for torrents, but it doesn’t seem to work and I don’t know why...

Dear lord! I’m over a year late for the meetup! Add another IRC junkie to the channel. wink

Sorry for bumping an old topic, but I’m just so excited. laugh

This bump actually made me notice davidm’s post ..

The port which needs to be forwarded from your router to your pc is 113 .. the one responsible for receiving the identd request many irc servers send to you during the connect process.

The port range 6667-6669 i mentioned (much, much smiley ) earlier is actually the port at which the server itself offers the actual irc service and is not the one you need to forward.

Sorry for the confusion and the very very late reply smiley
