Check in PHPMyAdmin (if available) and make sure that the active users internalKey column is not listed as unsigned. If it is remove that property of the column and try again.
where would I do that - where would I find whether it is listed as unsigned?

It would be listed ’unsigned’ in the Attributes column when looking at the structure of the table.
